The Medical Billing Specialist is responsible for collecting, posting, and managing patient account payments to ensure the patient is paying the correct amount for services provided, as well as submitting patient claims to insurance companies and following up on the claims with insurance companies. Growth opportunities include learning the various roles of the front desk to include check and check out, with pay increases as applicable.
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Preparing and submitting clean claims to various insurance companies either electronically or by paper
- Answering questions from patients, clerical staff, and insurance companies
- Sending appeals/reconsideration to insurance companies regarding denied claims
- Identifying and resolving patient billing complaints
- Performing various collection actions including contacting patients by phone; correcting and resubmitting claims to third party payers
- Provide front desk support to help with patient flow
- Processing payments from insurance companies and preparing a daily deposit
- Maintaining strictest confidentiality; adhering to all HIPAA guidelines and regulations
- Performing other work-related duties as assigned
Requirements
- Knowledge/experience of medical billing/collection
- Knowledge/experience of how to read insurance remittance advise and post payments
- Knowledge of business office procedures
- Knowledge/experience of basic medical coding and third-party operating procedures and practices
- Ability to operate a computer, computer software, and basic office equipment
- Ability to operate a multi-line telephone system
- Skill in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner
- Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions
- Must be well organized and detail-oriented
