Job Description

SUMMARY

Under the technical and administrative supervision of the Laboratory Manager, the Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Laboratory Technician will perform a variety of standardized medical laboratory tests.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Independently performs specimen processing, clinical laboratory testing, result review and reporting, quality control procedures and quality assurance tasks. Serves as a resource person to other staff for these activities.
  • Performs startup and maintenance procedures on all instruments; loads and performs testing procedures; reviews and verifies results; troubleshoots discrepant or unusual results; notifies the appropriate person of critical values or discrepant results; performs follow-up procedures as necessary; and reviews daily quality control with appropriate documentation.
  • Applies knowledge of specific techniques, test principles and limitations, and instruments to daily work. Correlates and confirms test results with physiological conditions and patient diagnosis. Determines when more information is necessary to complete physician requests and communicates concerns with the physician.
  • Assumes responsibility for flow, quality, and accuracy of work and test results. Practices “continuing improvement” by recognizing procedure or system problems and bringing them to the attention of the Laboratory Manager with suggestions for improvement or change.
  • Recognizes problems, identifies causes and makes corrections. Refers problems outside of the scope of practice to the Laboratory Manager, reference lab or physician as appropriate.
  • Monitors and maintains accurate records of quality control, proficiency testing, instrument maintenance, and inventory. Assists Laboratory Manager with quality assurance issues, policy and procedure preparation, regulation and certification requirements.
  • Utilizes resources including time effectively. Keeps workstation clean and stocked. Notifies the Laboratory Manager of shortages. Uses the clinic resources (computers, phones, etc.) for work-related activities only. Assists Laboratory manager in inventory and supply control and ordering. Is dependable, consistently on time to work and follows work rules concerning attendance.
  • Provides assistance to coworkers and assists in training of personnel. Stays alert to tasks in which assistance to co-workers will help complete the task in a more efficient and time effective manner. Promotes team effort.
  • Maintains competency in laboratory procedures and policies by participating in annual competency evaluations, continuing education opportunities, laboratory and clinic meetings and in-services. Takes initiative to review policies and procedures as time permits and suggest changes or updates to the Laboratory Manager as appropriate. Assists Laboratory Manager in competency evaluations.
  • Maintains professional behavior at all times. Acts as an example to MLTs and other staff of appropriate behavior with patients, co-workers, etc. Maintains patient privacy. Keeps conversations with patients, staff, and co-workers appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager.

FTE: 32 HRS PER WEEK

QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful completion of a Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited Medical Technology program for Medical Laboratory Scientist role. Successful completion of an Associate of Science Degree from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program for Medical Laboratory Technician role. Certification or eligibility for certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or other equivalent certifying agency. Previous laboratory experience as a generalist in those areas relevant to the RDC Laboratory setting (chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, body fluids, ELISAs) is desirable. Good oral and written communication skills. Basic computer skills Ability to work independently or with co-workers Dependability/Flexibility

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to ambulate independently, climb stairs, bend, squat, and stoop. Ability to lift/move up to 20 lbs. Normal hand dexterity and ability to grasp and pinch. Ability to hear normal sounds with some background noise, see objects closely, use a computer keyboard effectively, and write legibly.
