Job Description
Job Summary:
Performs venipuncture and capillary specimen collection on patients. Performs maintenance, calibration, and quality control procedures for each test performed to ensure quality specimens for laboratory testing.
Primary Duties:
1. Performs patient preparation and specimen collection; phlebotomy duties include venipuncture, capillary puncture, labeling, preservation and fixation of specimens, processing, preparation for transportation, and proper storage of specimens.
2. Follows laboratory procedures for specimen handling/processing and reporting/ maintaining records of patient results.
3. Performs testing in a timely manner, and in accordance with department and organizational policies, ensuring the highest level of result accuracy and specimen integrity.
4. Operates laboratory computer including logging in of patient samples and entering test and diagnostic codes as needed. Report results accurately in the lab computer system and communicates with the provider as needed with any relevant test results or concerns.
5. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and either corrects the problem or immediately notifies management so that corrective action may be taken.
6. Perform the required maintenance, calibration, and quality control procedures for each test performed.
7. Document all correction actions taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specification.
8. Follows Laboratory Quality Assurance and Safety policies.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED for the position:
Associate of Arts or Science degree in a scientific related field and completion of an accredited program for Medical Laboratory Technician.
MLT (ASCP) or equivalent certification in good standing or be eligible for certification exam within up to 180 days.
Meets qualification for and obtains a State of Washington Medical Assistant – Phlebotomist (MA-P) or Medical Assistant – Certified (MA-C)within 60 days of hire.
Must be able to communicate in a clear and precise manner to providers, co-workers, patients, vendors, and general public.
Must have legible handwriting and proficient keyboarding skills.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office applications.
