Position description
Accurately transmits messages between non-English speaking patients and healthcare providers or support personnel at Mayo Clinic using consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation modes. Provides education and consultation to both providers and patient/families on culturally specific values, beliefs, and practices that are relevant to the health care encounter. Adheres to the National Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Health Care and to the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care. Participates in an on-call rotation according to the guidelines established for the specific language groups. May assist with new interpreter orientation and mentoring. Works in a fast-paced clinical environment with frequently changing priorities. Job may be physically demanding with frequent walking and standing. May also be emotionally challenging and highly stressful, requiring maturity, composure and sound judgment.

Qualifications
Completion of an associate's degree, preferably a medical interpreter program or in healthcare-related field, plus two years of experience in a health care setting with strong medical vocabulary required; OR a High School Diploma plus four years of healthcare or related experience. A bachelor's degree is preferred.

Must demonstrate fluency in English and the target language with a minimum level of Advanced Low proficiency based on the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) oral proficiency interview (OPI). Must be able to read and write in English and the target language. Must have knowledge of cultural backgrounds of patients to be served. Must have good interpersonal, customer service, time management and basic computer skills. Requires successful completion of approved medical terminology course within one year of position start date.

Additional qualifications
Certification through the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) is preferred. The CCHI exam includes an Associate Healthcare Interpreter (AHI) status or the Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) status. Certification through the NBCMI includes the Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) status, Qualified Medical Interpreter (QMI) status, or Screened Medical Interpreter (SMI) status.

Compensation Detail
Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $21.80 per hour.

Schedule details
This is a supplemental position with no set or guaranteed hours. Shifts will only be as needed. Office Hours:7:00 AM - 6:00 PM Monday - Friday. This position will require you to be on campus when interpreting.
