About the Position
The Media Relations Specialist is primarily responsible for implementing public relations strategies programs for the Council. This role coordinates:
- Development of press releases and media pitching
- Media requests and interviews with leadership
- Relationship with public relations contractor
- Communicating and maintaining a positive relationship with the media.
- Exploring ways to share messages over traditional and new media.
- Learning more about audiences and figuring out what messages resonate best with each
- Staying up to date and experimenting with the latest public relations trends

Core Responsibilities– Department Specific
- In coordination with Vice President and Assistant Vice President, oversee NCARB’s public relations initiatives from initial strategy and development through implementation and measurement, such as: project plans, asset creation, targeted pitching, trade show engagements, crisis communications, and media monitoring. This includes collaboration with the entire Communications team, and partnership with other departments and senior staff.
- Oversee external public relations contractor relationship(s), including NCARB’s PR agency, monitoring service(s), and related corporate sponsorships.
- Coordinate NCARB’s response to requests for information from the media by designating an appropriate spokesperson or information source, as well as developing related op-eds or talking points.
- Ensure the creation of news releases, announcements and other external communications that extend the NCARB brand, raise awareness of key initiatives, and provide grassroots public relations support.
- Maintain a quarterly media relations calendar and monitor news coverage.
- Edit and/or fact check press releases, executive communications, internal communications, and digital content.
- Establish and maintain strong client relationships, leading with a collaborative and service-oriented approach.
- Continually monitor the horizon for the latest in content innovation, best practices, and trends; and assess feasibility and relevance for NCARB.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of relevant experience in public relations, content generation, or communications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Journalism, Business, Communications, or related field; or, combination of substantial related experience, training, and education may substitute.
- Demonstrated track record of excellent writing and storytelling skills.
- Have exceptional attention to detail and managing multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient in Adobe (PDF) Applications and Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Outlook, Excel, and Power Point.
- Experience and familiarity with the AP Style Guide.
- Familiarity with Agile methodology.
- Some minimal travel including weekends may occasionally be required.
