Reporting to the Superintendent, Operations & Mechanical, the Mechanical Manager is an integral team leadership role of the American Rocky Mountaineer Operations & Mechanical team for the Rockies to the Red Rocks (RTR) route. The Mechanical Manager will be assisting with the management of the long-term host railway, regulatory and partner relationships as well as tactical management of the day-to-day mechanical operations.
The Mechanical Manager ensures the local Mechanical team delivers to the integrated Operating and Maintenance Plan. This includes the execution of plans and strategies for safety, service, and productivity to achieve on-time train performance and mechanical requirements. Supports leadership accountability to ensure the mechanical team is trained, certified, and monitored for regulatory safety compliance as per operating rules.
The Mechanical Manager has a high level of autonomy in making decisions as a leader for the (RTR) route and will closely work with other managers within the RM Operations leadership team.
Key Areas of Accountability
- Maintain relationships among regulatory agencies, host railways, industry experts, partners, and professional associations
- Oversee the inspection, maintenance, cleaning, and repair of the rail equipment fleet in accordance with FRA regulations, OEM recommendations, and Rocky Mountaineer standards and procedures.
- Execute change initiatives
- Empower team members to achieve individual, department, and corporate goals
- Optimize asset utilization on overall equipment effectiveness, cycle times, and repair metrics
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements are met
- Support the staffing of the mechanical department including the selection, training, and performance management of mechanical personnel.
- Work collaboratively with multiple departments to achieve company deliverables
- Conduct safety and performance audits
- Assist with management of maintenance and capital projects
- Develop and monitor the execution of maintenance, provisioning, and servicing work orders
- Execute training programs for team members
- Participate in personal development company initiatives
- Conduct performance reviews and assist in career development plans for team members
- All other duties as assigned
Safety
- Comply with all Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), General Operating Instructions (GOI), host railway rules/requirements, and all other safety policies and procedures
- Ensure compliance with incident reporting processes, ensuring the safety and security of team members, guests, and contractors are met in compliance with associated regulations
- Meet or exceed safety and security deliverables
- Assist with investigations of workplace accidents and implementing corrective action(s) required
- Support Environmental Health & Safety by ensuring required incident reporting processes are executed
- Ensure communication of and compliance with all company safety policies, procedures, and rules
- Maintain basic first aid level provided by Rocky Mountaineer
Operations
- Ensure mechanical operations are within compliance with the Systems Operating and Mechanical Plan
- Manage the execution of mechanical requirements with the support of the RM Operations Centre
Mechanical
- Assist with the execution and continuous enhancement of a successful Maintenance Program
- Read, understand and interpret schematics, manuals, and other instructions pertaining to the equipment
- Train for the use of equipment and hand tools
- Build and ensure accurate completion of work orders collaboratively with team members and contractors
- Adhere to car equipment maintenance standards, schedules, and programs; provide technical guidance to the Superintendent, Operations & Mechanical.
- Meet or exceed mechanical and reliability deliverables
- Execute mechanical programs for all locations

Qualifications*
This position is deemed Safety Sensitive and pre-employment testing will be required. Final candidates must successfully pass a safety sensitive medical exam. This position requires you to periodically access an active railway area where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property, or the environment.

Education, Certification, Licenses*
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Post-secondary education in business management, an asset
- Valid U.S. Driver's License and clean driving record
- Qualified Maintenance Person (QMP) certification, an asset
- Knowledge of A.A.R. and FRA regulations regarding the maintenance of all railway equipment
- Understanding of appropriate internal and external regulations
- First Aid Certificate is an asset
Experience/Skills
- 7+ years of Railroad experience
- 3+ years of managing employees
- Expert in leadership and communication skills
- Experience in and budgeting and material handling processes
- Strong coordination and organizational skills
- High attention to detail with a desire to maintain brand standards
- Able to take personal accountability, be adaptable, and be a problem solver
- Competent with the MS Office Suite including applications
- Project management experience is an asset
- Able to work cross-functionally
- Knowledge of risk/loss control strategies, and prevention through maintenance processes
Work Environment
- Requires frequent travel
- Physical demands may require lifting to 80 lbs. on occasion
- Rail industrial site that requires walking and sitting throughout the day
- 24/7 operation that may require varied work schedules

- Salary Range*
- $84,000 - $90,000
