The Mechanical Engineering department has over 1,650 undergraduate and close to 140 graduate students in M.S. and Ph.D. programs. The present faculty size of 35 is expected to significantly grow over the next several years through this search and other planned faculty hires. The Department is comprised of three main groups; Thermofluids Science, Dynamic Systems and Control, and Materials Processing and Manufacturing, with research clusters and state-of-the-art laboratories in internal combustion engines, thermal and building energy, human-machine interaction and soft robotics, additive manufacturing, nanomechanical characterization, bio-inspired nanocomposite, and automotive engineering, just to name a few. With total annual sponsored program awards of close to $11 million, the Department is home to several federally/state-funded centers.

The Mechanical Engineering Department is one of the seven departments in the UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering which has over 6,000 students and over 150 tenured or tenure-track faculty. The College occupies well over 500,000 square feet of state-of-the-art facilities with research and instructional space, including the $300 million Shelby Engineering and Science Quadrangle completed in 2014 and the newly reopened $22 million renovated H.M. Comer in 2018.

Established in 1831, The University of Alabama (UA) currently enrolls over 37,000 students and employs over 2,000 full and part-time faculty members in 13 colleges and schools. In 1837, UA became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA is one of the fastest growing flagship universities in the nation. The University of Alabama is ranked among the top 60 public universities in the nation in U.S. News and World Report’s annual college rankings for more than a decade. The Carnegie Foundation has recognized UA with its Very High Research Activity status (formerly known as R1 status). The University is located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with a metropolitan population of over 200,000.
