The Manager of Research Projects position entails work across various projects that employ mixed-method approaches (both qualitative and quantitative) to examine the impact of various social forces (especially religion) on global health initiatives at Emory in order to strengthen the public health response of those initiatives.

The person in this position will split their time across a portfolio of projects.

In this work, they will be responsible for research, programmatic, and administrative responsibilities of the Interfaith Health Program (IHP) and the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) Program.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision of the Project Director, the Manager of Research Projects will work with a team of faculty and staff to carry out the following activities in these three areas:

Research support

• Implement and maintain mixed-methods research activities on funded projects of the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network at EGHI and the PEPFAR/UNAIDS faith initiative at the Interfaith Health Program (IHP).
• Develop and submit research protocols for submission at Emory and in-country ethical review boards.
• Coordinate and actively engage in the design, collection, monitoring/evaluation, and analysis of data.
• Manage data management architecture for the projects.
• Work with a team on curriculum design on various public health topics for implementation in various global health programs.
• Work with a team to provide onsite and remote training on mixed-method research approaches, capacity-building, and training of trainers.
• Develop protocols and frameworks for qualitative and quantitative research initiatives.
• Conduct primary and secondary data analysis.
• Perform remote and onsite data quality assurance/quality control to identify data discrepancies and provide recommendations for corrections.
• Work with a team to develop study manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and for oral and poster presentations at academic conferences.

Program support

• Develop standard operating procedures and other guidance documents for sites and implementing partners to adapt and implement.
• Serve as the primary liaison between sites or implementing partners and the Emory site.
• Monitor site progress and/or challenges in achieving program milestones and generating deliverables.
• Provide technical assistance to sites to advance programmatic activities.
• Liaise with extramural sponsors, in-country partners, and other implementing partners to ensure project deliverables are met.
• Collaborate on grant proposal development, preparation of project progress reports for extramural funders, and development of research reports.

Administrative/logistical support

• Assist in the hiring, training, and supervising graduate research assistants
• Represent Emory and the program at various stakeholder meetings and at conferences.
• Develop progress report narratives and fiscal reports.
• Assist with timely processing of relevant expense reports for project staff, consultants or subcontracts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Sociology, and Psychology or related discipline and two years of professional level research experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Strong cross-cultural and institutional communication, interpersonal, organizational, and project management skills
• Previous experience with applied research projects, preferably in global contexts
• Experience working independently to manage multiple priorities and project activities while also working in collaboration with an Emory research and staff team, graduate students, and diverse partners
• Experience in settings when cultural sensitivity and understanding around factors such as (but not limited to) religion, HIV stigma, child health and mortality, religious practices at the time of death and burial, negotiating cultural perceptions that are known to be in tension with elements of the public health program, and the experiences of vulnerable populations
• Knowledge and experience with mixed-method research design and data collection and analysis
• Ability to communicate verbally in French in order to work in Francophone countries/contexts

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and within a team environment
• Flexibility to travel globally to various countries to work with site teams there and to maintain communication with Emory colleagues while traveling
