Job Description

Job Summary

This position is responsible for developing, organizing, planning, leading, and directing clinical and management activities for the designated department(s), which may include Acute Care Services, Emergency Department in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. Accountable for daily operations and oversight of nursing practice and patient care delivery. Participates as a member of the health care team in maintaining continuity and quality of patient care. Contributes to organizational operations and supports the mission by fostering interdepartmental communication/collaboration. Demonstrates a high level of ability in leadership, supervisory skills, problem solving, patient advocacy and public relations.

Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages and evaluates the clinical operations, programs and resources of the assigned clinical areas to assure the safe and appropriate delivery of care.
  • Ensures that all activities are conducted in a timely and cost-effective manner and in compliance with organizational values, professional standards, internal policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in the development of and implements new clinical systems/programs to enhance existing services and raise the standard of care for the patient population served.
  • Oversees the resolution of daily clinical administrative and operational issues.
  • Ensures all aspects of clinical operations are conducted and documented in compliance with relevant internal policies, standards/procedures, and applicable regulatory and accrediting body requirements.
  • Participates in annual budget process, reviews revenues and expenses, completes Departmental Operating Reports (DOR) on a monthly basis.
  • Participates, as a key member of the management team for the assigned clinical function, in the development of strategies, initiatives and programs addressing matters such as: provision of new services or programs, standardization of procedures across the organization, maximizing resources, improving cost-effectiveness of clinical services provided, enhancing patient outcomes/satisfaction and other issues of similar complexity and consequence.
  • Provides clinical oversight of the Swing Bed program. Works in collaboration with the Swing Bed Program Coordinator and Therapy Department Manager to improve program deliverables and ensure conditions of participation are met.
  • Coordinates activities of the Outpatient Infusion Services Program. Collaborates with other departments such as pharmacy, ambulatory clinics, and emergency departments to ensure timely outpatient services are available.
  • Assists as needed in the Emergency Department. Acts as a resource during times of high volume or acuity working with the ED charge nurse to ensure safe quality care.
  • Assumes authority and responsibility for hospital operations in the absence of Director of Acute Care and Emergency Services. the Chief Clinical Officer and Emergency Department Manager

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN). An equivalent combination of education and experience in a setting that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge/abilities may substitute, pending confirmation of BSN in progress.
  • Three (3) years of recent nursing experience in a hospital setting.
  • Three (3) years as a charge nurse/supervisor or one (1) year of management experience.
  • Emergency Department or Critical Care experience, preferred.
  • National certification, preferred (CEN, CCRN, CMSRN)

Required Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations

  • Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse license through WA State Department of Health
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications.
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification, preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of nursing theories and practices. Demonstrated competence in clinical skills such that he/she is able to perform, evaluate and teach required nursing tasks.
  • Knowledge of hospital administration, nursing services, customer relations, and plant operations.
  • Proficient in the use of current technology, including Microsoft Office products. Ability to learn and effectively use electronic medical records and other systems and equipment.
  • Ability to develop processes and protocols and to maintain accurate documentation and records.
  • Ability to cultivate effective partnerships and work in collaboration with providers, other health care professionals, caregivers, and patients. Strong leadership, facilitation, delegation, and coaching skills.
  • Professional and effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to identify and employ communication strategies appropriate to the audience.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, education, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently performing a wide variety of assignments that require the use of independent judgment, problem-solving, organization, and prioritization skills.
