Job Description

Job Title: Maintenance Manager Location: Navajo Mine

Reports to: Operations Manager Department: Maintenance

Summary of Position:

The Maintenance Manager will be responsible for the overall management and performance of the field maintenance and rolling stock maintenance activities, through effective utilization of personnel, equipment, and other resources in a safe, reliable, efficient, environmentally sound, and cost-effective manner in support of the business unit's performance measures.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and communicate maintenance requirements with operations, engineering, and costing functions at the mine.
  • Ensure there is good communication with production.
  • Coordinate all safety activities and company programs ensuring compliance with Navajo Transitional Energy Company (NTEC) and MSHA safety standards.
  • Build, manage, and control annual maintenance budgets.
  • Manage all field maintenance and rolling stock activities and plans.
  • Manage laydown yard(s) condition.
  • Oversee/manage large field jobs.
  • Establish inspection processes and assist in planning maintenance to increase the availability of fleets.
  • Ensure field maintenance has a structured plan to follow.
  • Ensure consistency of supervision and performance with all maintenance crews.
  • Ensure work is executed and completed as planned within the department and in alignment with the operation of the mine.
  • Support maintenance planners and develop their roles.
  • Ensure planners and supervisors understand and meet expectations.
  • Ensure planners are managing their backlog.
  • Assist planners to make sure all completed work is properly closed out and has adequate documentation.
  • Identify training needs to improve employees’ skill levels.
  • Develop and oversee training plan for staff and crews.
  • Develop Maintenance Technician roles.
  • Ensure all field area equipment is correctly set up and maintained in Ellipse.
  • Ensure work areas and employee activities comply with all company and regulatory safety policies and procedures.
  • Eliminate barriers to the processes and communications between departments and operations that are not needed.
  • Identify areas of opportunities to gain efficiencies and plan implementation of improvements.
  • Perform administrative duties associated with management, such as, evaluating individual performance, counseling, or disciplining unacceptable behavior and assisting individuals with personal or performance problems.
  • Must take a personal and active approach to health, safety and environment and understand and follow all state, federal and company health, safety, and environmental requirements applicable to the work area and tasks assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience in both maintaining draglines and rolling stock is required.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and the ability to be effective managing employees.
  • Ability to evaluate and implement new methods and techniques for operational improvement.
  • Ability to interface and communicate with all departments at all levels.
  • Demonstrate competence in key areas of management and leadership expertise including relationship management, staff direction and motivation, quality management and the achievement of targets.
  • Efficiently organize schedules to accomplish tasks, projects, and goals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Experience with building and controlling annual maintenance budgets more than 10 million dollars

Required Education, Training and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years as a Maintenance Supervisor/Planner in Mining Industry.
  • Experience as a Maintenance Manager is required.

Leadership/Management:

  • Must be assertive, influential, take initiative and be able to analyze and promote more effective alternative strategies.
  • Develop and lead teams.
  • Demonstrate competence in key areas of management and leadership expertise including relationship management, staff direction and motivation, quality management and the achievement of targets.
  • Efficiently organize schedules to accomplish tasks, projects, and goals.
  • Ability to build relationships and work well across functions.
