Position Summary:
Manages workforce of Nurse practitioners employed in the hematology department. Focuses on recruitment, onboarding, meeting departmental and organizational goals as directed by the Director of Advanced Practice. Is able to practice with a defined clinical component with physician support. Acts as a resource to the NPs in service line and is a representative of medical oncology/surgical oncology NPs in committees and task forces as assigned. Is a forward thinker who is able to seek alternative solutions to resolve problems with an accountability to the hematology team and leadership. Delivers independent direct medical management for a Medical Oncology/Surgical Oncology population according to standardized procedures and in collaboration with a physician advisor. Provides care within scope of license in collaboration with physician. Professional practice as a health team member is defined by departmental policies with institutional approval. Emphasis is placed on health promotion and patient education, combining the qualities of both nursing and medicine. Act as a patient advocate in all ethical and legal aspects. Is a role model to others and is supportive of staff to support practice growth and opportunity. Supports leadership aligned goals as outlined in the nursing strategic plan.

Essential Functions:
- Utilizes the City of Hope nursing process in clinical practice.
- Assumes responsibility for independent, direct medical management of a defined patient population, according to standardized procedures and in collaboration with a physician advisor.
- Performs physical examinations applying the medical model and nursing process to patient care problems that require medical intervention and skill. Strives to maintain consistency of quality patient care for admitted patients during stay in defined area while waiting for placement
- Develop/follow protocols/standardized procedures for practice for Nurse Practitioners in the department.
- Assists in developing methods and systems for provision of medical care and overall department operations.
- Maintains open lines of communication with the physician and multidisciplinary health team regarding patient information across all service lines for hematology. Works with Director and NP Manager of Hematology to streamline processes for standardization as appropriate to increase efficiencies.
- Under supervision of a physician advisor, performs initial and interval physical assessment for evaluation of patient progress, applying techniques of observation, inspection, auscultation, palpation and percussion.
- Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings, consulting with physician advisor when indicated, evaluates, diagnoses and manages certain illnesses and conditions, orders appropriate laboratory studies, identifies appropriate pharmacologic agents and non-pharmacologic interventions, refers or consults with other physicians within City of Hope Medical Center.
- Develops and implements patient education activities; provides education and counseling to patients.
- Develops and participates in performance improvement activities to evaluate the program's effectiveness in meeting patient care and departmental needs.
- Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reviewing current literature, attending in-service meetings, and workshops.
- Attends and participates in meetings. Works within scope of leadership practice and as an NP to represent APPs in initiatives within the program and with nursing leadership.
- Personnel and Human Resource Management
- Recruit and maintain adequate numbers of competent staff to provide care and meet
- patient care standards
- Facilitate the orientation of new staff and the continuing education and professional development of existing staff in collaboration with Department of Clinical Practice and Education.
- Assure staff have current licenses, certifications and are competent to provide care.
- Manage and lead staff to develop collaborative working relationships within department and with other departments as applicable.
- Collaborates with human resources to provide counseling or performance improvement of staff as needed.
- Develop, maintain and monitor staffing plan for assigned units.
- Support and develop staff to participate in (shared governance) at the unit and organizational level.
- Provides oversight and manages temporary (registry/traveler) staff that may be assigned to department(s).

Qualifications
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
- Master's Degree
- Three years nursing experience.
- Demonstrated a formal leadership role (leading, planning, and evaluating nursing practices and operations).
- Current NP certification
- Current California RN license
- Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Card through American Heart Association
- ACLS preferred
- Previous management experience.
