Job Duties:

Maintenance Worker

Perform general maintenance and recycling related work in support of Household Hazardous Waste Program. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Recover refrigerant from household appliances; sort incoming material
  • Segregate ferrous and non-ferrous metals
  • Sort, bulk, and store
  • Drain oil and gas from recycled motorized equipment
  • Segregate and bulk solid and liquid household hazardous waste
  • Sort and bulk batteries; dispose of chemicals following specifications
  • De-rim tires, disassemble items to recover steel, aluminum, and other valuable components
  • Prepare items for shipping by performing "loose-packing" and bulking
  • Provide customer service and assist in general clean-up efforts following hazardous material/waste spill on Landfill property relating to Landfill vehicles or equipment
  • Work independently with standard procedures, City policy/directives, and be capable of adapting to new or unusual circumstances
  • Possess skill in the use of maintenance of hand tools, power tools, and testing/processing equipment under all weather conditions
  • Ability to detect needed mechanical work and make minor repairs on hand tools, power tools, and testing/processing equipment
  • Ability to understand instructions and submit daily equipment and work reports
  • Knowledge of standard principles, methods, materials, and equipment used in household hazardous waste disposal operations.
  • Ability to maintain records and write basic reports related to collection and processing of household hazardous waste
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations
  • Skill in interpersonal relating and good judgement in resolving customer service issues

This position will be required to hold or obtain and maintain the following certifications and training within one (1) year:

  • EPA Certification as a Universal Technician (40CFR, Part 82F)
  • HAZWOPER 40-hour Training
  • Eco-Flow Training
  • Cylinder de-valving

Successful candidate must:

  • Have the ability to pass Hazmat physical and respirator fit test.
  • Successful candidate must pass pre-employment respirator capacity and fit testing.
  • Successful candidate must submit to completing a baseline health physical and to annual medical monitoring.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS:
Completion of 7th grade plus one (1) year of experience in fields, such as municipal public works maintenance or construction, utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities; or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
May require a Commercial Drivers License.
This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned.
This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing.
Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
