Under minimal supervision and with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, performs senior level maintenance work such as planning, assigning, inspecting, and coordinating activities of workers engaged in maintaining and repairing the physical structures of buildings, roads, and roofs. May train and supervise others.
Essential FunctionsDirects workers and engages in performing structural repairs of masonry, woodwork, building envelope, roads, signs, walls, stairs, and entrances of buildings.
Inspects completed work for conformance to work order specifications, industry standards, and quality.
Reviews, assigns, performs, and closes work orders.
Ensures that all preventive maintenance procedures and tasks are carried out correctly, efficiently and according to schedule.
Obtains quotes for projects from outside contractors and directs contracted projects to verify adherence to work order specifications.
Generates construction specific standards, plans and schedules.
Manages shop inventory of materials, supplies, machinery and equipment.
Creates in-house estimates for labor and material cost; reports the estimate to supervisor for review and approval.
Reviews and assists with budget preparation related to major maintenance projects and deferred maintenance.
Inspects projects upon completion for compliance to work order.
Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, quality of product, and working conditions to increase efficiency of shop, department, or work crew.
Manages project costs including employee time and material records.
Creates a safe work environment for themselves and their employees including providing PPE, MDS and Job Hazard Analysis.
Manages shop spending as per budget.
Overtime may be required.
Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems.
Complies with all State and University policies.
Other duties may be assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's objectives, policies and applicable laws.

High school diploma or GED
Six years of experience, related to the statement of duties and responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience. May be required to travel to off-campus UTEP sites. Expert level craftsman in all aspects of building maintenance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required stand; walk; use hands to feel. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. May be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment to include: steel toe or non-slippery shoe, eye protection, hard hat, dust mask or respirator mask, welding suits, and ear protection.
