JOB LOCATION: Wellmark YMCA
SHIFTS AVALIABLE: Monday, Wednesday, Fridays 5a-10a and Wednesdays & Fridays 4:00-8:30p.
CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS: April 25, 2021; Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We will train applicants who are not currently certified in Red Cross Lifeguarding.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
As a Lifeguard, you will have the opportunity to provide everyone with a safe place to swim, learn, grow and play. You will maintain a safe swimming environment in the pool, on the pool deck and the surrounding areas. You will be able to relate to people in a positive manner to build relationships with all who enter the pool.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Enforce rules and procedures.
- Keep pool and pool deck free of obstructions and safety hazards.
- Maintain constant surveillance of the water and pool deck areas.
- Handle equipment as assigned to ensure safety.
- Record chemical readings.
- Know emergency procedures and is able to demonstrate them.
- Maintain emergency equipment.
- Respond to all emergencies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or designated staff person.
- Demonstrate and support the objectives of the Association as embodied in the mission statement and value
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical functions
- Must be at least 15 years of age (15 year olds are required to have a work permit on file with the Iowa Division of Labor and the YMCA of Greater Des Moines Human Resources Department.)
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or equivalent - Prior to staring
- Intro to Y’s Cause & Culture Online Course - Prior to starting
- Training to be completed within the first 30 days and maintained afterwards:
- Mandatory Child Abuse Reporter certification.
- Blood Borne Pathogens Training.
- Member Safety and Risk Management Training.
- Other training as needed.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively with people and monitor property and activity
- Ability to remain alert at all times
- Ability to adapt to changing working conditions
- Ability to perform strenuous physical activity
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Good communication skills
- Ability to work with diverse group of people
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to maintain control of area even when distracted by noise
- Attend trainings and/or courses as required by the YMCA
