POSITION: Director of Organizational Development and Diversity
WORK GROUP: Library Organizational Development
REPORTS TO: Dean of Libraries
SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Director of Organizational Development and Diversity is the leader for all aspects of human resources planning and management, and the coordination of equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives, to advance university mission and goals. The Director serves as a member of the library’s executive team, administers human resources functions, oversees organizational development approaches, and facilitates EDI policy and programs across the staff and faculty of the Northwestern University Libraries and University Press. The Director is the key liaison for employment and personnel policy, procedure and compliance with University offices in human resources, EDI, training, the Office of the Provost and similar areas. This responsibility includes direct supervision of 3 FTE support staff and oversight of recruitment, performance management, employee relations, student hiring process, diversity training, advising all categories of employees on library and university policies and procedures, succession planning and organizational development initiatives. Formulates a vision and strategy and collaborates to manage change and increase EDI, and to prepare staff for new roles through staff development programming and training opportunities. The library and press together employ approximately 75 librarian faculty, 40 non-librarian exempt staff, 101 non-exempt staff, and 270 student employees. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Strategically aligns the University and Libraries academic and diversity plans with the libraries' internal HR functions such as position design, recruitment process, performance management and staff development; stays abreast of current trends in human resource management and EDI advancement.
- Responsible for recruitment and retention of a diverse workforce (including library faculty, exempt and non-exempt staff, and student workers) with the skills and expertise needed for new and emerging roles; works with managers and department heads on staffing needs, advising on job restructuring and reclassifications; ensures that the library personnel office complies with federal, state and university guidelines in the recruitment of staff; Engages in succession planning.
- Oversees the University performance management system for library faculty and staff. Integrates library service, diversity and university goals with performance assessment. Provides guidance and support for managers and staff.
- Leads efforts to cultivate and sustain a high performing organization by fostering a diverse and inclusive environment that values integrity, teamwork, clear and respectful communication and problem solving.
- Responsible for fostering a diverse and inclusive environment; Encourages and supports diversity and inclusion programs, activities, training and development. Ensure coordination and communication about EDI projects and activities that may occur across all units of the Libraries and the Press.
- Manages library personnel office operations; supervises 3 FTE; Ensures that the personnel office web site contains appropriate, accurate, and up-to-date information.
- As part of the Executive Team, create and implement change management strategies and plans that maximize employee understanding and adoption and resolve conflict.
- Manage employee relations through responding to issues and questions about staffing, compensation, benefits, payroll, and other personnel matters; collaborate with the Northwestern University Human Resources Department (NUHR) to ensure compliance with university procedures and policies in all personnel-related activity;
- Provide direction for staff development program; Employs coaching, mentoring, inclusion and leadership development approaches to foster staff success and management and team effectiveness.
- Convene advisory committees drawing on diverse library staff at all levels as an ongoing mechanism for organizational development and diversity planning.
- Serves as a member of the Executive Team, department head groups, council and campus-wide committees such as the NUHR School Administrators group and the Provost Office Faculty Administrators. Represents the University Libraries in committees on the campus, in the community, in consortia and with professional organizations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: ALA accredited master's degree in library or information science or the equivalent combination of relevant education and library experience; minimum of five years of human resources experience or library experience with evidence of increasing responsibility in human resources. Experience with leadership of multi-dimensional diversity and equity initiatives. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with diverse groups; excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; a strong commitment to service and teamwork; excellent judgment, organizational and analytical skills. Knowledge of, and experience administering, human resources policies, regulations, and practices; experience in the interpretation of policy; experience in supervision and management; training and/or experience in negotiation and mediation; commitment to the principles of staff training and development with the demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and evaluate staff development programs; Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, awareness, and understanding of diverse thought, cultures, race, religion, gender and other differences.
Preferred: Previous human resources work experience in a research library setting and previous successful experience as an instructor or trainer.
This position is eligible for appointment as Librarian Faculty (non-tenure eligible) pending terminal degree qualifications.
