Job Description
The Lead Health Career Navigator is a full-time, grant-funded position that entails working with students in programs within the Health Institute at MSU Denver. The Health Institute supports a diverse student population to prepare them for jobs in the Colorado health workforce. These students are seeking a degree in one of our Health Institute departments and receive training in culturally diverse patient centered care.
All Health Career Navigators report to the Director of the Health Institute. The Lead Health Career Navigator recruits, advises, provides resources, coordinates service, delivers programming, supports grant activities, coordinates with external partners for students majoring in health fields, supervises the Health Career Navigators, and performs other duties as assigned.
The Health Institute at MSU Denver currently has two structured programs: The National Ambassadors Program (MSU Ambassadors) and an Adult/Non-Traditional Program (MSU Non-Traditional Program) for veterans and other adult students. Additional programming may be developed dependent upon funding opportunities. The MSU Denver’s Health Institute is housed in the College of Health and Applied Sciences. The programs will empower diverse undergraduate students who come from underrepresented economic and educational backgrounds to succeed in our pre-health/allied health programs.
MSU Denver is particularly interested in applicants who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented and historically minoritized groups. Our student population consists of over 50% first-generation students and over 45% students of color. We are a designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) located in downtown Denver. As the third largest institution of higher education in Colorado and the only institution with an open access mission, MSU Denver is a model university for today’s college students. The University serves the most diverse undergraduate student population in the state, as well as the most first-generation students and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals students. - Facilitate new hire support through onboarding and collaboration with Human Resources
- Help design and implement programs that are used by the Health Career Navigators and the students
- Coordinate events and campaigns to support the Health Career Opportunity Program and the Health Career Navigators
- Coordinate student success programs that are culturally diverse and appropriate for health career jobs
- Provide supervision to the Health Career Navigators
- Train and update Health Career Navigators on new curriculum and events that are developed every semester
- Facilitate community building for Health Career Navigator staff, support accountability and practices and work with the Health Institute Director to create staff retreats
- Help students develop a plan to enter the workforce through life design advising
- Provide resources and services to students to increase retention and graduation rates
- Work with community colleges to facilitate transfer students into MSU Denver
- Help coordinate community events and programs
- Coordinate the recruitment processes, every year, to insure that grant requirements are met
- Contribute to curriculum development and course delivery and coordinate ways to implement changes in HCOP programming
- Recruitment of mentors and coordination with external partners to mentor students
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Experience working with students in an education or community-based setting, as a recruiter, advisor, case manager, mentor, or teacher
- Bachelor’s degree in higher education, human services or related field
- Master’s degree in a related field
- Experience working in a health setting
- Casework or case management with diverse populations
- Academic advising at the college level
- Mentoring high school or college level students
- Experience using Banner and/or Degree Works
- Developing training or workshop curriculum aimed at student success and retention
- Experience working with external partners and/or health agencies
- Experience recruiting mentors and matching mentees to mentors
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects/ duties and responsibilities
- Experience supervising full time professional staff, student employees, or volunteers
- Excellent oral and verbal communication skills
- Experience working with diverse populations including non-traditional students, students of color, first generation college students, transfer students, student from rural communities and/or veterans
