General Notes

J ob offer contingent upon applicant clearing a background check, receiving an acceptable driver's rating, and passing a strength and agility test (WorkSTEPS).

Responsibilities
  • P rovides supervisory assistance in the maintenance of campus grounds and remote sites through the use of large equipment to include riding mowers, tractors, backhoe, sweepers, push mowers, string trimmers, backpack blowers, and other tools necessary for proper landscape care.
  • M aintains landscape to University standards. Reports trouble conditions on campus especially in areas related to landscape such as trip hazards, broken limbs, water breaks, and any other condition that might be a safety hazard to the University community.
  • S afely operates landscape equipment to include riding mowers, tractors, backhoe, sweepers, push mowers, string trimmers, backpack blowers and other tools necessary for proper landscape care.
  • D rives University owned light or medium duty trucks and trailers in the transport of crew members, equipment, tools, materials, and supplies to or from work sites. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.
  • P erforms minor preventative maintenance on equipment and power tools, maintains preventative maintenance schedules, reports maintenance repairs, and cleans equipment used by Landscape Services.
  • P rovides quality customer service while performing landscaping duties on main campus and remote sites.
  • F ollows and readily accepts written and oral instructions and maintains work schedules set by the supervisor.
  • C ompletes moderate computer tasks, reviews and completes daily labor reports, and evaluates performance of staff.

Required Qualifications

H igh school graduate or GED. Four years of landscape maintenance or landscape industry experience, to include one year of supervisory experience. Four years of experience using landscape equipment. Current Class "C" operators driver's license. Prior to date of hire, applicant selected must provide a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) showing a driving history going back 36 months. This includes all states resided in for the past 36 months. MVR will be evaluated to determine eligibility to drive a University owned vehicle. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas driver's license within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

C ollege-level degree or formal coursework in horticulture or related field. Technical training or certifications in landscaping or horticulture. More than four years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscapes in an institutional or commercial setting. More than four years of experience using landscaping equipment. More than one year of supervisory experience. Pesticide Applicator license issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).

Salary Range

$33,230 + depending on qualifications

Work Shift

  • Hours may vary with work requirements during the growing season, special functions on campus, and emergencies.
