Posting SummaryRutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Researcher IV for the Waksman Institute of Microbiology. The position is within a laboratory that conducts fundamental biomedical research investigating molecular mechanisms of growth and morphogenesis. The Laboratory Researcher IV assist the research efforts of the lab.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Performs scientific research experiments under the direction of the supervisor or senior scientists within the lab.
  • Performs administrative and supports tasks necessary to effective operation of the lab, such as inventory, ordering, and maintaining laboratory cultures.
  • Performs scientific procedures in support of lab research, such as transfection, western blotting, animal dissection, immunostaining.
  • Performs technical tasks in support of lab research, such as making lab reagents, autoclaving glassware.
  • Collects data on complex scientific instrumentation, including LiCor Odysseey and confocal microscopes.
  • Demonstrates and explains various laboratory techniques to laboratory personnel, students and others.
  • Maintains insects, animals and/or bacterial and tissue cultures for experimental purposes.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelors degree in the biological sciences or related fields; or an equivalent combination of education and/ or experience.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of and experience with fundamental molecular biology techniques including DNA cloning and PCR.
  • Knowledge of and experience with fundamental histology techniques including tissue fixation and antibody staining.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years experience as a laboratory technician.
  • Knowledge of transfection for working with cultured cells.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Drosophila genetics for conducting experiments with Drosophila.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Occasionally lifts and/or carries objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally stoops and bends.
  • Occasionally reaches and grasps with arms and hands.
  • Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
  • Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
