Job Description:

As a Laboratory Assistant, you will perform pre-analytic testing responsibilities including clerical duties, data entry, specimen collection and specimen processing.

Job Duties:

  • Demonstrates competence in patient preparation, collection, and handling of blood and non-blood specimens. Maintains awareness of timely collections and adheres to collection timing. Practices and enforces Meritas safety policies. Verifies appropriate test request, specimen type, collection container, special handling, and processing requirements.
  • Performs patient identification, specimen labeling, and tracking without errors. Demonstrates ability to think critically and problem solve in unexpected situations.
  • Performs clerical/reception duties including, but not limited to, appropriately dispatching phone calls and communication requests to correct people and/or department, accurately filing and maintaining paperwork and test requisitions, distributing paperwork to appropriate locations, and demonstrating competency in referring to policies and procedures to assist others. Continually manages requests and receipt of blood and non-blood specimens, their status, following through to completion. Completes checklists and logs daily or as required.
  • Recognizes and coordinates duties to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency during assigned shift without interfering with the quality of work. Demonstrates ability and willingness to help others in the department to complete all assigned tasks. Uses time between duties to departmental advantage by performing ancillary duties and projects. Readily assists departments outside the laboratory requesting support with specimen collection.
  • Maintains clean, stocked, organized work areas (trays, carts, work benches/desks). Appropriately manages incoming and outgoing lab supplies, exercising good stewardship and documentation practices.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • 1 year of experience in a physician’s office setting
  • Basic Life Support certification through American Heart Association
  • Basic office skills
