Job Description
Under general supervision, performs work which involves collecting and/or processing laboratory specimens, entering data into the electronic health record (EHR) and/or the laboratory information system (LIS). Interacts and communicates with patients, their families, and members of the healthcare team by using various communication tools in a timely and professional manner.

RESPONSIBILITIESSpecimen Processing
- Assist in maintaining supplies, helping with inventory, and placing orders
- Perform patient check-in while maintaining excellent customer service
- Manage client test results according to established procedures
- Assist with training of new staff and students
- Utilize the electronic health record (EHR), laboratory information system (LIS), Client software (Atlas), and the email system to efficiently complete daily tasks
- Utilizes the laboratory information system (LIS) to monitor the appropriate test pending logs and communicate to the technical staff to ensure testing is not delayed
- Perform all specimen processing functions to receive and process specimens according to laboratory protocol, including, but not limited to:
- Specimen labeling using proper patient identification techniques
- Preparing specimens to be sent out to reference laboratories
- Process client ordering via Altas or paper document
- Perform urine collections for urine drug screens and complete proper paperwork
- Operate laboratory equipment for which they have received applicable training and supervisor approval to perform
- Other duties as assigned for which they have received applicable training and supervisor approval to perform
- Assist in maintaining supplies and helping with inventory
- Assists with training of new staff members and students
- Perform standard procedures for the collection of laboratory samples including but not limited to:
- Patient identification
- Venipuncture collection
- Capillary collection
- Urine collection
- Documentation of collection in the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
- Review and release patient laboratory orders in the electronic health record (EHR)
- Review, order, and collect patient laboratory orders from an outside facility according to standard operating procedures.
- Properly processes and distributes specimens following collection
- Explains collection processes and procedures to patients, customers, and their families
- Prepares specimens for send out to reference laboratory (HHS Main Campus), including properly labeling, aliquoting of specimens, and any associated LIS documentation (transfer lists)
- Prepares, performs, and documents select testing according to standard operating procedures for which they have received applicable training and supervisor approval to perform
- Assist in maintaining supplies and helping with inventory
- Support quality improvement initiatives and lean processes
- Accession specimens according to standard procedures in the laboratory information system
- Properly identify, label, process and distribute specimens using standard protocol
- Respond appropriately to internal and external customer needs and communicate any problems or issues to them
- Assist with pathology send-outs
- Assist with instrument maintenance
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- An approved equivalent combination of education and experience
- Certified or certified-eligible with a nationally accredited phlebotomy association
- Completion of ten quarter credits of biology or chemistry college courses
- Six Months of experience in a clinical laboratory setting
