The Lab Technician (Process Engineer) for our Virology lab independently processes specimens and loads them onto testing instruments; participate in test validation and implementation; assists in instrument maintenance and troubleshooting; performs a variety of process improvement duties and participates in pre-clinical test development, training and ad-hoc projects as directed.
Essential Functions
- Participates in pre-clinical test development and validation according to established protocols.
Examine workflows in the lab and make proposals on how to eliminate waste and improve efficiency.
Processes specimens including DNA and RNA extraction.
According to procedure prepares specimens and maintains pure viable stock cultures in preparation for testing and quality control as directed.
Adheres to all Safety/Health regulatory and state/federal legal requirements and policies, operating procedures, and Services Standard of the Hospitals.
Assists in routine and regularly scheduled preventive maintenance for all automated and semi-automated instruments per established procedures.
Maintains the logs and records for all laboratory transactions and information in accordance with department and regulatory requirements.
Performs a variety of clerical functions such as word processing, entering information into the database, handling calls and inquires and other support functions as assigned.
Processes specimens that have been analyzed for outside reference laboratories for additional testing; monitors the progress and transcribes results in laboratory information systems following established procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.
Education: Bachelor's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university
Experience: One (1) year of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Ability to foster effective working relationships and build consensus
Ability to learn new procedures and adapt to technological changes in the laboratory
Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities
Ability to perform basic mathematics
Ability to speak and write English effectively at a level appropriate for the job
Knowledge of computer systems and software used in the functional area
