- Obtains blood specimens accurately and quickly using proper technique with attention to patient care and safety and promptly delivers specimens to the laboratory for the reporting of results.
- Correctly identifies patient and labels specimens according to procedure manual, 100% of the time, as observed by supervisor. *
- Reports to the floor to obtain specimens according to urgency of request and promptly returns specimen to laboratory as observed by supervisor with no more than 4 variances per year. *
- Collects specimens using proper technique to avoid hematomas, short draws, hemolysis, etc., at all times, with a minimum of "couldn't gets," as observed by supervisor with no more than 7 variances per year. *
- Exercises good judgment in handling unusual circumstances (i.e., drawing near IV site, A-lines, etc.) and notifies appropriate tech in each instance, as observed by supervisor with no more than 4 variances per year. *
- Checks for discrepancies in orders and resolves any that exist, signing only after patient is drawn, as outlined in phlebotomy manual and documented on checklist no more than 6 variances per year. *
- Recognizes and addresses growth and developmental changes and needs in caring for and providing treatment to neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric patients. *
- Follows all related policies and procedures as outlined by THH lab. *
- Screens and refers all incoming calls and department visitors in a timely manner.
- Answers the telephone promptly and courteously, identifying self and department at all times.
- Assists all visitors or callers, routing to appropriate department within 5 minutes of receiving call.
- Maintains accurate telephone messages for department personnel and routing of same in a timely manner.
- Promotes a safe working environment by regimented clean up and adherence to safety manuals.
- Cleans drawing room before the end of each shift, as observed by supervisor with no more than 4 variances per year. *
- Protects self and co-workers by practicing safety precautions as established in safety and infection control manuals. *
- Keeps phlebotomy tray clean and organized as observed by supervisor with no more than 4 variances per year. *
- Facilitates effective ongoing communication both within the lab and with other departments to ensure efficient departmental operation.
- Answers telephone and pages promptly in a courteous manner, identifying self and department at all times.
- Demonstrates good judgment in directing phone calls or questions to the appropriate department or individual with no more than 6 variances per year.
- Assists as necessary in orientation and training of new employees as documented on training checklists.
- Relays information to on-coming shift, making sure department is covered prior to leaving as observed by supervisor with no more than 6 variances per year.
- Performs a variety of clerical tasks to ensure smooth operation of department.
- Restocks drawing room supplies daily, emergency department or nursery as needed.
- Demonstrates knowledge of computer functions and a willingness to fill in for secretarial assistant when necessary, as observed by supervisor. *
What You Will Need:
- High school graduate or equivalence required.
- 3-6 months of experience in a hospital setting required.
- 1 year of experience in a hospital setting preferred.
- PBT(ASCP) or equivalent preferred.
