The Center for Comparative Medicine provides for the care, health and well-being of all research animals used in the pursuit of scientific achievement and excellence at Baylor College of Medicine. Under minimal supervision, the Laboratory Animal Technician will provide skilled care and handling of gnotobiotic laboratory animals. Primarily working in germ-free areas to include: standard housing, biohazard, non-human primate and specialized animal colonies. This rolel is also responsible for limited supervisory duties including direction and oversight of work, but excluding discipline.
Job Duties- Conducts daily health checks and feeds and waters animals under gnotobiotic conditions.
- Enters sterile supplies into animal housing areas using specialized equipment and aerosolized sterilants.
- Changes cages as scheduled and sanitizes housing areas.
- Performs technical procedures such as: blood collection, administration of test articles and medication, permanent animal identification and animal restraint.
- Assists with surgeries, and pre- and post-surgical care of animals.
- Maintains accurate colony records and study records.
- Records study-related data and communicates to stakeholders.
- Implements study plans and coordinates with other staff to achieve scientific objectives.
- Participates in technical services offered by department.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Four years of relevant experience.
- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
- Certification must be obtained within one year of hire or promotion.
