Functions and Responsibilities
The Department of Laboratory Sciences in the College of Health Professions at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) seeks applicants for a full-time, 12-month faculty position, located in Little Rock, Arkansas. We are searching for a team-oriented faculty member to join the successful, dynamic and student-oriented laboratory sciences program. Academic rank and salary are commensurate with experience and qualifications. Tenure or non-tenure track is available, depending on academic qualifications. Position reports to the cytotechnology program director.
The cytotechnology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. The medical laboratory sciences (MLS) program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. The cytotechnology program is a 12 month program consisting of on-campus didactics and clinicals at multiple locations. The MLS program offers a full- or part-time day program with one cohort of up to 30 students beginning each fall semester. The full-time track requires 17 months to complete. The part-time track allows students a maximum of five semesters to complete the program. The program also offers an MLT-to-MLS distance track that is designed for medical laboratory technicians (MLTs). Upon completion of the full-time, part-time, or MLT-to-MLS track, a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences is awarded.
UAMS is Arkansas’ only academic health center with seven institutes including the Reynolds Institute on Aging, Stephens Spine Institute, Jones Eye Institute, Myeloma Institute for Research & Therapy, Psychiatric Research Institute, Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, and Translational Research Institute. - 12-month, full-time faculty position that reports to the laboratory sciences chair or designee
- Participate in the organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development and general effectiveness of clinical experiences for laboratory sciences students
- Teach in the cytotechnology and/or medical laboratory science program
- Focal point for student recruitment, advisement, mentoring, admissions and interviewing
- Participate in research and other scholarly activities appropriate to faculty rank and track
- Engage in service activities, consistent with university and college expectations for core faculty
- Contribute to program and curriculum assessment, planning and implementation activities
- Participate in accreditation-related review, self-study and site visit processes
- Maintain current certification(s)
- Assist other faculty by co-teaching or providing assistance as deemed necessary by the program director
- Bachelor’s degree in cytotechnology or equivalent and certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as a Cytotechnologist (CT)
- At least two years experience as a practicing Cytotechnologist.
- Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills, ability to identify and solve problems
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, or Medical Laboratory Technician from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent agency. Categorical certification is acceptable
- Advanced degree in science, business, education, or health-related field from an accredited institution
- Excellent presentation skills that will enhance the Department’s recruiting efforts in both medical laboratory science and cytotechnology.
- Teaching experience (online, classroom, and/or clinical)
- Strong knowledge of Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) training programs
- Familiarity with online learning platforms
- Ability to also teach in MLS sub-disciplines
