Job Summary:
Otis College of Art & Design Student Learning Center Instructional Lab Assistant is a temporary part-time, non-exempt position. Under the supervision of the Student Learning Center Coordinator, this position is responsible for the supplemental instruction of students in a lab setting. Instructional Lab Assistants also provide tutoring services for students in the Student Learning Center. Part-time hours are 14-19 per week from August 15, 2019 to May 15, 2020 and may include evening hours. This position reports to the Student Learning Center Coordinator.
- Provide tutoring to students in study skills, conversation skills, reading skills, and writing skills in the Student Learning Center
- Aid students with the use of writing, reading, grammar, and software
- Provide lead supplemental instruction in study skills, conversation skills, reading skills, and writing skills in a lab setting
- Review and stay up-to-date with academic standards and curriculum of the Liberal Arts and Sciences Department (LAS)
- Assist with the development of academic lab instructional materials
- Assist with the administrative operations of academic labs
o Assist in the assessment of students’ academic performance
o Communicate with students via email/text and/or phone calls when necessary
o Review and report students who are at risk of failing their LAS courses
o Assess the quality of student work
o Assist students in reaching equitable academic standards
o Report attendance and academic performance after every lab
o Assist in the review of student performance on all digital platforms
- Ensure excellence in customer service for all SLC services
- Answer student general informational questions and troubleshoots hardware and software problems
- Help with the gathering, interpretation, and reporting of student data
- Attend all relevant meetings
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Principles of effective written expression including spelling, punctuation, grammar, and construction.
- The reading process and reading improvement techniques and resource materials used to develop basic reading skills such as vocabulary, comprehension, and speed.
- Capabilities of computer systems, software, and hardware common to instructional laboratories.
- Provide instructional assistance to students.
- Adapt tutorial methods and course work to meet individual student needs.
- Work effectively and cooperatively with students and instructional staff.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Give clear and concise instructions.
Qualifications:
A BA degree in English (or the equivalent) and at least one year of writing tutoring experience in a Writing Center/Learning Center or an AA degree in English (or the equivalent) and at least six months of writing tutoring experience or one year of general tutoring experience. Computer proficiency is required.
ESL or ELL certification or Teaching Experience preferred.
