Job Description
Reporting to the Director, Online Learning, the Instructional Designer position designs and develops courses for asynchronous, synchronous, and hybrid instructional delivery modes. This position collaborates with individual faculty to implement/design courses that facilitate high-quality learning experiences, providing input on course elements, project management support, and tracking the status of course development. The Instructional Designer collaborates with the Online Learning team on a variety of instructional design, technology, and innovative projects.
Specific Responsibilities
  • Design, manage the structure and implement the organization of online course resources and online courses in conjunction with faculty subject matter experts.


  • Develop media-rich instructional material.

  • Collaborate with faculty members to identify and apply appropriate technology (assessments, interactive activities, animated videos, graphics and images, and text-based content) to achieve learning goals in online courses.

  • Instruct faculty in the use and/or application of instructional technology integrated in the College’s learning management system (Canvas).

  • Collaborate with faculty to develop model/template courses.

  • Manage the online learning request process.

  • Apply the Quality Matters Rubric to evaluate online content.

  • Train faculty to align their teaching style, course learning objectives and assessment methods to design the course for optimum online delivery.

  • Create resources for professional development and lead workshop sessions.

  • Serve as online faculty support for online teaching resources (best practice guides, tutorials), managing course design reviews, and providing online teaching consultations to online faculty.

  • Facilitate online learning readiness preparation for students.

  • Ensure compliance with federal Title IV, SARA regulations, the College’s policies, and departmental guidelines.

  • Ensure copyright compliance and the legal and ethical use of electronic, digital, and virtual content in online courses.

  • Maintain and apply current knowledge of accessibility guidelines, and ensure all course resources meet the needs of varying audiences.

  • Recommend new tools or enhancements to operations as needed.

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge and trends in online learning by attending educational workshops, webinars, reviewing professional publications, and researching.

  • Collaborate with other Online Learning team members with projects.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems reported by users.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or Educational Technology or related degrees required. Any and all degrees must be from a recognized institutional accreditor.


  • A minimum of two (2) years experience in instructional design for online courses in an academic setting required.

  • Demonstrated experience working in a team environment developing instructional learning material.

  • Experience with data analysis/metrics reporting, and outcome-based assessment required.

  • Expert-level knowledge of one or more learning management systems required.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Quality Matters Standards, accessibility, and copyright guidelines required.

  • Ability to troubleshoot technical challenges and determine the best resolution required.

  • Ability to review and provide critical instruction for improvement of course resources required.

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills required.

  • Strong customer service skills required.

  • Ability to quickly learn, adopt and apply new technologies and technology skills.

  • Ability to maintain sensitivity, understanding, and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Online teaching experience preferred.


  • Expert-level knowledge of the Canvas learning management system.

  • Previous experience as a Canvas system administrator preferred.

  • Proficiency with Kaltura video management system preferred.

  • Experience in designing online courses using open educational resources (OER) preferred.
