The Department of Population and Public Health Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of USC is seeking an experienced instructional design manager to build and lead its Instructional Design team.
The Department currently offers various masters and doctorate degrees, including a fully online MPH degree. We are planning to build upon current programs and courses as well as deliver new online and hybrid courses in public health. The Instructional Design team will work directly with faculty and collaborate with video production staff to create all aspects of the department’s online and hybrid courses and programs.
The Instructional Design Manager will be a pedagogical expert and instructional design leader for the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences. He/she will serve as senior project manager and lead the Instructional Design team to create high quality courses and curricula for online/hybrid programs.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Manages and prioritizes complex instructional design projects for faculty and staff. Supervises and coordinates projects of instructional designers and ensures alignment with the department’s strategic goals, consistent quality and learning effectiveness, and use of innovative technology across all online, hybrid and specialized programs.
- Oversees instructional design team. Fosters team approach to designing student-centered learning experiences. Manages and mentors staff and conducts training to empower data-driven decision making. Develops production timelines and coordinates resources to ensure design needs, goals, and deliverables are met for each project. Facilitates communication between instructional design team and relevant stakeholders, both within and outside the department. Recruits, and interviews instructional design staff, as needed.
- Partners with faculty and subject matter experts to formulate learning objectives, align course content, and identify appropriate digital/online instructional strategies. Ensures that courses meet ADA and universal design for learning principles.
- Works with faculty and team members to experiment with emerging technologies and teaching strategies. Stays current with trends in higher education learning, innovations in pedagogical research, instructional design principles, curriculum development, and learning experiences, and with changes in relevant regulations and best practices. Makes presentations at conferences and may publish in professional journals.
- Guides planning, implementation, and evaluation of instructional materials, learning management systems, hybrid/online courses, media content, and instructional technology software and hardware.
- Utilizes web technology, workshops, and one-on-one training to provide faculty with developmental tools to promote best practices for online courses and assessment.
The Successful Candidate
The successful candidate will have:
- Preferred Education Master's degree in instructional design, education technology, distance learning, or related field
- Higher Education teaching experience
- Demonstrated expertise in instructional design, educational technology, distance learning, with solid understanding of pedagogy, innovative instruction trends and faculty development
- Extensive consultation experience with faculty in higher education
- Best practice experience of instructional design principles, electronic learning, coaching, assessments, course materials, and adult learning
- Excellent oral and written communications skills and superior interpersonal skills with the ability to make professional presentations
- Advanced project management and organizational skills, including the ability to execute on a number of diverse projects simultaneously while managing details and meeting deadlines
- Excellent organizational ability, effective delegation and follow through
- Proficiency in use of Canvas LMS, Blackboard LMS, Zoom video conferencing platform, and polling software
- Proficiency in use of Adobe Creative Suite, Camtasia, Keynote, and other software used in online course creation
- Knowledge of USC’s Curriculum Management System and Student Information System
- Demonstrated experience with office management communication software/tools (e.g., Google suite, Slack)
- Knowledge of public health graduate level programs
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree Minimum Experience: 5 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Five years’ experience in higher education. Demonstrated knowledge of educational and instructional design theories, and direct experience developing substantive courses and engaging educational experiences. Proven experience with a variety of instructional technologies, as well as a working understanding of HTML/CSS. Demonstrated experience with a learning management system, and proficiency with relevant computer and mobile applications, multimedia, course management applications, and/or related software and hardware. Experience with video recording and editing, and the use of digital media and web technologies for educational purposes. Skilled in data analytics, and project management, and in-depth knowledge of international education, and international student and scholar needs. Proven ability to interpret, analyze, and apply pertinent policies, procedures, regulations, and requirements. Exemplary knowledge of relevant local, state, and federal regulations governing education, academic programs, and higher education institutions, including Section 508, the Americans with Disabilities Act-related amendment of the U.S. Workforce Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Skilled in counseling, conflict resolution, problem-solving and decision-making. Experience fostering an environment of trust, collaboration, transparency, and accountability. Experience with software development and overseeing software development and support teams. Extensive experience delivering information technology customer service based on service levels and service quality measures, delivering technology services in the field through coordination with central teams, and driving continuous service improvement. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide both detailed information as well as summaries to relevant stakeholders, and experience presenting technical topics to non-technical audiences.
