Job Description

80 hours bi-weekly; evening shift; rotating weekends and holidays

Previous IV experience, or ability and willingness to be trained, knowledge of USP 797 and 800 guidelines for IV sterile compounding, or ability to learn. Basic algebra used in calculating doses. High accuracy and consistency in following cleanroom and sterile IV compounding procedures, including the manipulation of hazardous drugs/chemotherapy.

The Pharmacy Technician performs a variety of duties and technical tasks structured to assist the pharmacist, patients, and other healthcare providers. These tasks are designed to support the medication distribution system for hospital patients. The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for providing services in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Supports the medication dispensing practice through accurate preparation of doses, delivery of medications via computerized tube system or hand delivered as needed, maintenance of Pyxis stock, CII Safe, and processes discharges and transfers. Performs stock billing functions. Assures that medication stock is in date and not deteriorated through monthly assigned checks. Repackages medications supporting the unit dose systems. Assists with monthly cleaning and disinfecting clean room per established procedure. Self-directed to work in an efficient and organized complying with hospital policies and procedures. Performs all duties of Pharmacy Technician under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. Participates in continuous process improvement initiatives.

Education

High School Diploma/GED is required.

Licensures

Registered Maryland Board of Pharmacy Technician is required.

Certifications

National certification preferred.

Experience

Previous pharmacy technician experience is preferred.

Skills

Basic computer/keyboard skills (including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and a good understanding of medical terminology are required. Must be able to participate in all aspects of drug distribution, communicate with other hospital employees, and prioritize work based on acuity/need.
