Providence is calling an Infant Nutrition Technician (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Day Shift, 0.0 FTE) to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. In this position, you will:

  • Prepare all infant feedings as ordered. Verifies new or questionable infant feeding orders with ordering MD/NNP or Registered Dietitian for accuracy. Obtains standardized recipes as needed. Accurately prepares feedings per established written formulations and per quality control and infection control standards. Uses correct techniques to measure powders and liquids. Stores prepared feedings per unit guidelines and best practices. Delivers prepared feedings to patient area room refrigerators after nurse verification of preparations.
  • Maintain daily records of patient profiles. Uses EPIC to update patient feeding orders and to print labels. Communicates with allied health care personnel regarding orders. Completes daily batch records for prepared feedings. Reviews and updates TempTrak temperatures for out-of-range patient room refrigerators as well as Nutrition Room refrigerators and freezers. Takes appropriate action and works with Facilities if temperatures are out of range. Removes unused, previously prepared infant feedings from patient care refrigerators 24-48 hours after preparation time and discards according to established protocol.
  • Inventory and maintain sufficient infant formula, donor breast milk and feeding supplementation stock. Orders infant formula from dietary department and feeding supplies from general stores or unit’s special order designate. Checks expiration dates on products. Reports to Nursing Manager when short-dated or damaged products are received from a vendor. Follows procedures for formula, donor milk, fortifier or supplement recalls at the direction of the Registered Dietitian or Nursing Manager.
  • Maintain sanitation of the preparation area. Cleans and sanitizes all work surfaces in the infant nutrition preparation room before and after each preparation. Cleans utensils, equipment, and storage areas used in the infant nutrition preparation room according to established procedures. Follows aseptic techniques with dietary preparations. Follows department and infection control best practices regarding the handling of infant feedings. When appropriate, prepares samples for bacteria check according to established protocol. Maintains daily appearance according to department guidelines. Calls/ Reports to Charge Nurse if ill. Contacts Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager with staffing needs or changes.
  • Manage unit supply of Pasteurized Donor Human Breast Milk (PDHM). Prepares feedings of PDHM for infants in the NICU and special orders for Peds/PICU per Dietitian request. Maintains inventory freezer stock of PDHM and frozen supplements/additives according to par and current census. Activates communication chain for ordering PDHM and supplemental products. Communicates with General Stores on day of frozen PDHM or frozen supplemental product arrival to PAMC. Inspects deliveries for breakage, thawing or contamination prior to adding to inventory. Documents packaging condition and breakage, thawing or product contamination concerns to the Providence Purchaser liaison. Maintains records of frozen PDHM and supplements used in daily dietary preparations. Prepares monthly reports of PDHM use for Management.
  • Prepare formulations or standardized recipes as provided by the Registered Dietitian responsible for the nutritional care of the infants. Confirms accuracy of each patient’s order with a 2nd tech, including patient and scanning labels. At delivery, technician co-signs delivery sheet with bedside nurse after nurse reviews preparations for accuracy.
  • Check dietary preparation equipment and dishwasher for proper operation. Equipment and dishwasher malfunctions will be reported to Biomed or Facilities and the unit Manager.
  • Assist in training employees and interns (in approved PAMC programs) with infant feeding preparations and proper handling techniques, as needed.
  • Assist parents in infant feeding preparations and proper handling techniques, as needed. Provides written instructions and educational materials for parents.
  • Communicate with nursing staff, unit Charge Nurse and Nursing Managers regarding problems with patient orders, formula, or product issues.
  • Participate in cleaning patient refrigerators per unit guidelines.
  • Complete Competency Plan for assigned job and department.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Food Handlers Card
  • Able to perform necessary mathematical tasks at High School level or above and be able to demonstrate the ability to read, understand, and calculate weights and measures accurately

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • One year of college education (typically 24 – 30 semester hours or equivalent)
  • Experience in medical environment
  • Medical terminology experience
  • Food-handling experience, sanitation practices, detail-oriented related work

The Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is the only level III NICU in the state of Alaska. The NICU has a bed capacity of 42 with an average length of stay of 24 days. Significant subgroups include premature infants <37 weeks gestation, newborns with respiratory compromise, congenital anomalies and medical complications. Care in the NICU incorporates an interdisciplinary team collaboration to develop, implement, and evaluate an individualized plan of care.
