We are looking for an Industrial Design Director to infuse a level of creative positivity, motivation, together with the ability to drive design excellence in a fast growing, multi-functional team. You will lead and manage a multi-category industrial design team, bringing to life Stanley’s integrity, performance, innovation product and brand promise – both functionally and aesthetically.
As a member of the Global Product Creation team, you will partner with product management, design engineering, product development, brand marketing, R&D, consumer, and brand insights to create original and inventive design strategy, narratives and products that create a wildly imaginative future for the brand and business.
Key Responsibilities:
Leading and managing the team’s creation and execution of design work, from concept to design finalization. You will lead storytelling for the products that you and the team build, while also articulating the business reasons driving the design decisions. Specifically:
Lead Industrial Design to provide project and process management for converting a project brief and/or creative objective into a consumer-centric, functionally driven, three-dimensional product that can be successfully and profitably commercialized and produced.
Ensure the Industrial Design Team delivers on-time design according to critical dates, product specifications, integrity, sustainability, performance, and profitability goals. Lead and the Industrial Design team to drive aesthetic direction, materials, construction methods, mechanisms, shape, finishes, and manufacturing processes of final products. Drive Industrial Design team resource management to ensure appropriate capability and capacity is aligned with seasonal workflow. Partner with brand and creative leadership to determine product design strategy and priorities. Collaborate with the R&D team to create a brand centric innovation roadmap to influence future product and brand development.
Create a streamlined and high-level communication network across the company to effectively communicate project information and status to appropriate individuals, including all level of leadership and across multiple cultures. Elevate creative operational performance, direct improvements, and adjustments on a seasonal and daily basis. Drive engagement and collaboration with all creation partners to deliver product, content, stories, and narratives to budget and on time. Lead industrial Design to create and revise appropriate documentation for assigned products and ensure design integrity is project managed and implemented across multiple internal touchpoints.
Owns all Stanley design collaborating with existing or potentially new PLM systems. Leads industrial Design to keep abreast of design, consumer and market trends, category goals, new technology and socio significant impacts throughout the design process and engages appropriately to ensure projects are completed within corporate guidelines and goals. Research design and consumer lifestyle trends, cross referencing from fashion & beauty, furniture & home accessories, automotive, sport/lifestyle, packaging, music, art, and digital media. Works collaboratively with the Global Stanley Team to advocate and promote world-class design across the whole enterprise.
Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Industrial Design
- 15 years proven experience as a practicing designer for consumer hard goods
- 5+ years leading an Industrial Design team or studio (consumer hard goods preferred)
- Strong affinity with food, beverage, and outdoor lifestyles.
- Experienced with SolidWorks, Keyshot (preferred) or other rendering software, Illustrator, and Photoshop
- Proven skills in sketching and conceptualization
- Ability to work accurately with close attention to detail
- Proven knowledge of ‘Design for Manufacturability’ methods
- Sophisticated knowledge of product manufacturing including plastic injection molding, metal forming, CMF (Color, Material, Finish) techniques
- Proven experience working with, and presenting to customers
- Direct experience communicating directly with engineers and factories (Asia based factories preferred)
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 15% of the time
