Job Purpose
The Individual Income Tax Examiner conducts examinations of individual income tax returns to ensure compliance with federal and state tax laws while providing a customer centric experience. This is done by utilizing the integrate tax systems, staying abreast of legislative updates and focusing on the security of taxpayer data.
Job Duties
- Review individual income tax returns
- Verify the accuracy of returns filed and ensure compliance with SC laws
- Make decisions to determine appropriate action for outstanding discrepancies or issues
- Provide customer service to taxpayers, their representatives and internal customers by telephone, email, correspondence, and in person interviews
- Research and communicate information regarding interpretation and application of various tax laws, technical/delinquent, or account adjustments
- Acquire, apply, and maintain tax law knowledge necessary to perform duties unitizing tax laws, rules, regulations, agency established procedures, and policy documents
- Achieve and maintain system knowledge of functional areas, understanding system impacts to taxpayers and various tax areas
- Interpret and analyze system data to perform necessary updates and adjustments to taxpayer accounts
- Make recommendations and monitor system enhancements based on law changes, forms changes, and to improve efficiency and accuracy
- Research issues of Nonresident Sale of Real Estate, communicate with taxpayers and/or representatives, and process required forms and payments
- Develop, update, and review section procedures and make recommendations to improve existing practices or processes.
The employee in this position is considered to be in a trainee mode in the Tax Examiner series. The employee will regularly receive guidance and input from the immediate supervisor as well as senior Tax Examiners in the day-to-day administration of his/her duties.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Requires one of the following:
- An associate's degree from an accredited college or university and experience in a business or tax related area
- A bachelor's degree with multiple accounting courses may be substituted for the work experience
- Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning
- College transcript required for consideration.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications are not required but are considered when setting a starting salary within the hiring range.
- Highly Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a business or related field with finance, accounting, and/or business related courses
- Working knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices
- Basic knowledge of SC tax laws and forms and on-line computer systems
- Effective written and oral communication skills with internal and external customers
- Uses customer service skills in line with SCDOR standards to provide professional and courteous service
