Job Description

The Imaging Assistant supports the Radiologists, APPs, nurses, and technologists in the delivery of safe patient care and daily operations within Outpatient Imaging services as directed.

Assists providers/APPs with patient examinations, treatment and/procedures seen in the Interventional Radiology Clinic. Obtains vital signs, height/weight and records patient’s medical history and records other relevant data in the EMR. Assists the Imaging RNs/technologists with preparation of patient and procedure/exam room maintenance prior to, during and following imaging procedures. Coordinates access within imaging area such as scheduling, coordinating and monitoring patient appointments, admissions and/or procedures, organizes/maintains medical records and perform business-related tasks. As a health care advocate, supports patient focused care and provides patient instructions. Assists in picture/Imaging Archiving with some knowledge of the communication system of PACs.

Imaging Assistant Overview

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to :

1 . Schedules, coordinates and monitors patient appointments for provider visits, patient admissions and/or special procedure(s).

  • Verifies patient demographic and insurance information.
  • May Enters patient demographic and insurance information into practice management system.
  • Verifies necessary forms requiring patient signature are completed.
  • Helps obtain/ensure diagnostic test results for provider/authorized practitioner review is available.
  • Sends/receives patient medical record information following confidentiality guidelines and standards.
  • Accurately answers basic questions from patients regarding the procedures and tests they schedule for patients.
  • Monitors providers/APPs clinic schedules and organizes patient flow.

2 . Delivers patient care as delegated by the physician/authorized practitioner or RN to assigned patient population, or individual patient.

  • Prioritizes work based on patient acuity, available resources, and patient/family preferences, in collaboration with the physician/authorized practitioner or RN.
  • Prepares and maintains exam/treatment rooms for patient visits and restocks supplies as needed.
  • Adheres to infection control policies/procedures for exam room and instrument/equipment cleaning.
  • Assists with clinic /exam admissions, transfers, and discharge of patients including: orients patient/family to environment, assures patient’s belongings are accounted for
  • Rooms patient(s) and gathers data for patient assessment Obtains, evaluates and records patient history employing critical thinking skills.
  • Obtains and records vital signs
  • Prepares patient for and may assist with examinations, procedures and/or treatments.
  • Accurately documents care in the medical record.
  • Screens and follows up on test results
  • Transports patients, equipment, specimens and supplies as needed
  • Ability to utilize safe patient handling techniques and equipment such as Hoyer lift and other safe patient transfers.
  • Performs Glucose/I stat tests with proven competency

3 . Communicates effectively with patients and other members of the healthcare team.

  • Serves as a communication liaison between the physician and patient.
  • Serves as a professional patient advocate and health coach in a team approach to health care.
  • Recognizes and respects cultural diversity.
  • Adapts communications to individual’s understanding.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Effectively uses the EMR
  • Utilizes available resources to support communication with population served.
  • Communicates verbal and written information in a clear, concise, accurate and timely manner.
  • Communicates patient/family concerns to delegating provider/authorized practitioner RN or technologist in an effective manner.
  • Complies with established risk management and safety procedures.
  • Documents patient communication and clinical treatments accurately and appropriately.

4. Maintains exams/procedure rooms and supplies

  • Assist in preparation of patient rooms includes cleaning, stocking, and ordering of supplies
  • Assist with room turnover to gain efficiencies.
  • Adheres to infection prevention standards when cleaning , sterilizing and caring for instruments and other equipment
  • Assist with routine maintenance and quality monitoring of imaging equipment

5 . Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level of population served.

  • Partners with patient/care-giver in care/decision making.
  • Communicates in a respectful manner.
  • Ensures a safe, secure environment.
  • Individualizes plan of care to meet patient needs.
  • Modifies clinical interventions based on population served.
  • Provides patient education based on assessment of learning needs of patient/care-giver.

6. Performs other duties including Performance Goals developed by manager and employee and reported in the employee’s Performance Review as part of UMPhysicians’ Performance Management tools

  • Maintains core/universal competencies and completes any new required learnings.
  • Demonstrates all critical competencies and new required learnings.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BLS certification.
  • Basic medical terminology.
  • Previous Health Unit Coordinator (HUC), Nursing Assistant (NA) or Nursing Station Technician (NST) experience or some radiology training in healthcare.
  • One year of patient care experience in a fast, pace outpatient clinic or hospital/medical procedure setting.
  • Good keyboarding, phone and computer software utilization skills.
  • Prior experience using medical terminology.
  • Manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work well under stress in a variety of situations.
  • Confidentiality.
  • Self-motivated problem solver.
  • Excellent customer service, public and patient relation skills, and good communication skills, such as clear speech and writing.
  • Ability to prioritize work and fluctuation in workload.
