IHSA Science Writer (American English)

We are looking for writers who are comfortable covering health-related topics and/or scientific topics. Our website is focused on hair science. You’ll be writing about a range of subjects across dermatology, dermato-trichology, trichology, aesthetic treatments, mental health, and holistic health.

Writers must have written SEO-optimized content and/or journalistic content in the past. Most articles will feature a mixture of quotes and SEO keywords. Articles are generally around 2,000 words.

We are a science-driven organization. We aim to provide honest, accurate information backed by research and clinical trials. Our ideal science writer will be comfortable breaking down complex subjects, and understand how to write in a way that’s empathic when discussing health issues or unpleasant side effects.

About IHSA (The International Hair Science Association)

IHSA is a new organization focused on educating readers about hair science and hair loss. We intend to cover topics on all types of hair issues, from the most common hair loss condition (androgenic alopecia) to autoimmune conditions (like alopecia areata) and skin problems that lead to hair loss.

Our goal is to create a resource that’s useful for everyone – from older teenagers to doctors. This means that we’ll explain the basics of hair loss, hair loss disorders, and how medications work. We’ll also cover the latest hair loss research in an engaging way that’s easy for both healthcare professionals and their patients to understand.

Specific Responsibilities*

• Create SEO-driven content based on guidelines and a brief, which will cover word count, keywords, and an outline with H2s and H3s.
• Be comfortable adjusting the article structure if needed based on keywords, selected topics, or the number of references on a subject.
• Suggest visual assets, photo annotations or modifications, and/or infographics for our graphics lead to source or create. No need to do them yourself (but if you have experience creating infographics, we’d be happy to discuss rates for their creation).
• Edit content based on the advice of the medical reviewer and editor-in-chief. Our goal is to limit edits to two rounds per article.
• Include internal and external links in each article as stated in the guidelines.
• We sometimes include quotes in our articles. This will require some familiarity with finding reputable sources, interviewing medical professionals, and obtaining good quotes to incorporate into each article. These articles are paid at a higher rate.
• *Optional: If the writer isn’t experienced in sourcing scientific/medical documents, we can provide the references to be used to create the content. We also have a database of references the writer can pull from.

Location: IHSA is a remote organization.

Type of contract: Freelance (with the possibility of a retainer agreement if we work well together)
