Job Description:
JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director , the Histotech is responsible for proficiently and accurately performing all routine procedures in orienting, sectioning, and staining tissue specimens to produce slides which will aid pathologist in diagnosis. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, processing surgical pathology specimens such as FNA's, frozen sections and bone marrows. . The histotech will assist the pathologist(s) following established standards and practices. Assess and assists in the technical and clerical needs of the pathology department for support for regulatory and process improvement initiatives. Implements and utilizes quality management standards in compliance with CAP directives/checklists/protocols. Actively leads and/or participates in process improvement activities and other duties as assigned. This position requires strong teamwork to achieve common goals and meet deadlines to provide quality care to our patients.
JOB RESPONSIBLITIES
Accurately accessions all tissue from surgical procedures, bone marrow procedures, frozen sections and FNA procedures . Performs a variety of extremely difficult, delicate and complex tissue handling procedure such as frozen sections for rapid diagnosis of tissue during surgery.
Confirms specimen acceptability and suitability.
Accurately labels specimen and assist pathologist(s) in the gross surgical specimen. Manages the schedule for surgical, frozen and Imaging procedures that require pathology support for fine needle aspirations or biopsies.
Must be proficient in the use of all the equipment and instrumentation in the department related to histology and pathology.
Assists the pathologist and laboratory management as assigned. Performs other duties related to the Histotech position.
Performs small biopsy grossing (will train as applicable).
Ensures all histology policies and procedures are current and up to date.
Orient, embeds, cuts, stains and coverslips tissue blocks according to designated standard operating procedures.
Prepares reagents and stains, including advanced special stains, according to designated standard operating procedures.
Oversees and monitors histology inventory.
Maintains all anatomic pathology equipment and instruments.
Maintains knowledge of current CAP requirements and ensures the laboratory is 24/7 inspection ready.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or equivalent - AND- one of the following:
Associate's degree in Histology
OR
Histotechnician or Histotechnologist Certification
Experience: A minimum of two years experience as a Histotech.
