"Will Consider Histopath Tech I, II or III Levels"

The Histopath Tech prepares tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist. Performs duties independently requiring sound judgement and problem solving skills, under the general supervision of a supervisor, lead or charge technician.
Performs all duties of Histo Tech I, in addition to, maintaining and programming tissue processors, performing special stains techniques and preparing various staining solutions, decalcifying bone specimens and staining using a modified H&E stain technique, operating automated slide and cassette printers.

Education:

Requires a minimum of an Associate’s degree in Histotechnology

OR

Associates or Bachelors’ degree with at least 60 semester hours of academic credit to include a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), with successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnololgy training program or completion of a clinical histology rotation in a NAACLS accredited laboratory granting HT(ASCP) eligibility

OR(With 5 or more years Histology lab experience) will accept college course work of at least 60 semester hours of academic credit to include a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), with successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnololgy training program or completion of a clinical histology rotation in a NAACLS accredited laboratory granting HT(ASCP) eligibility

OR

Equivalent military certificate with histopath or hospital specialty.

Required Licensure, Certification, Etc.:

HT (ASCP) Certification Preferred

Work Experience:

One (1) - Five (5) years experience as a histology technician in a clinical setting, dependent upon education.

Knowledge/Skills:

Work requires knowledge of histochemistry, microscopy, processing techniques, preparation of specimens, medical terminology, and chemistry. An understanding of metric system is required.

Following standard operating procedures, capable of independently performing:

  • Loading and programming tissue processors
  • Embedding and organizing paraffin blocks,
  • Microtomy at appropriate thickness,
  • Staining of routine slides with hematoxylin and eosin (manually and automated),
  • Performing slide/block match for quality control recognizing discrepancies and takes corrective action
  • Performs microscopic quality control review of slides for routine and special stains
  • Use of laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: coverslipper, metric balance, water baths, ovens, computers, printers, microwave, etc.
  • Capable of performing preventative maintenance on microtomes, automatic stainer, coverslipper, automated stainers and other equipment as specified.
  • Computer competency with typing of at least 30 WPM.
  • Capable of independently preparing and performing all special stains;
  • Capable of decalcifying and staining of bone tissue;
  • Operation of the automated slide and cassette printing system
  • Requires basic knowledge of theory and concept of Immunohistochemistry.
  • Requires critical thinking and analytical skills to troubleshoot complex tasks.

    This is close precision work requiring attention to detail. Must have strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to read and interpret directions, both oral and written. Organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments. Can work successfully individually or as part of a team in a high volume, dynamic laboratory.

    Visual acuity and the ability to distinguish fine gradation of colors, including differentiating of red and green. Manual dexterity in both hands, with above average eye and hand coordination. Able to grasp and manipulate small instruments and delicate equipment
