Purpose of PositionInterviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.
Why does the job exist?Position will be responsible for all maintenance patrol operations and maintenance activities within the Las Vegas Patrol to assure all the roadways features are maintained in as safe operating condition as possible for the traveling public.
How does it get done?Operate and maintain medium to heavy duty equipment, operate the motor grader/blade at the advanced level, operate 5 and 10 yd dump truck with or without attachments to maintain interstate, roads, roadways, and highways for the safety of the traveling public.
Who are the customers?The traveling public.
Ideal CandidateWill have experience in:- Managing a field supplies budget.
- Experience scheduling work assignments at a patrol yard.
- Supervisory experience.
- Using Maintenance Management System.
- Training employees on the use of heavy equipment operations.
- Experience with highway maintenance and construction operations on the roadways.
- Traffic control operations, such as determining traffic control required, implementing the required
- Performing highway snow removal operations.
- Performing roadway maintenance activities such as: fence installation or repair, sign installation or repair,
- Operating a blade/motor grader to perform finish blade work, backhoe or loader, tractor with a
High School Diploma or Equivalent and one (1) year of experience maintaining roads and operating medium to heavy-duty equipment to include loader, blade, five and ten yard dump truck, self -propelled broom, roller, and/or mower. This position may require Herbicide, Tanker and/or Hazmat endorsement. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.
Statutory Requirement:
Must possess a New Mexico Drivers License and a New Mexico Class A CDL at time of hire. Post-offer Physical and Pre-Employment Drug Test are required for safety sensitive classifications.
These combinations of education and experience qualify you for the position:
Education Experience1 High School Diploma or Equivalent AND # of months or years of experience specified in the minimum qualification
2 Associate's Degree AND Zero years of experience

- If Minimum Qualification requires a specific number of "semester hours" in a field (e.g. 6 semester hours in Accounting), applicants MUST have those semester hours in order to meet the minimum qualifications. No substitutions apply for semester hours.
This position is designated as safety sensitive within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Must possess and maintain a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License at time of interview. This position may require Tanker and/or Hazmat endorsement. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and drug test and is conditional pending results. Business and/or personal reference checks and Driver's License verification are also required and employment is conditional pending results. Must successfully pass demonstrated abilities test with a 75% or better.
Working ConditionsAll employees with the State of New Mexico are required to provide either proof of COVID-19 vaccination or proof of a COVID-19 viral test every week.
Work is performed outside in varying weather conditions - hot or cold, wind, rain and snow, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, noxious plants and infected trash; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical expenditure; irregular hours day or night; to include but not limited to standing for extended time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control; subject to call out for weather or accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; work may also be performed in an office setting to include working with computers, faxes, copiers and printers; use of hands to finger, handle or feel while performing various assigned maintenance duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception, and ability to adjust focus; ability to lift up to 50 lbs; climbing, reaching, kneeling, crawling to perform equipment maintenance. Exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals, airborne particles and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed/high volume traffic; load noises.
