Under the general direction of the Chief Hearing Reporter, the Hearing Reporter, PUC, uses computer-aided transcription (CAT) to take verbatim accounts of conferences, hearings, workshops, and meetings of the Public Utilities Commission; scopes notes and proofreads final transcripts; and travels throughout the State to record proceedings. This is the entry and journey level class of the series.

Positions may be extended up to 24 months and may become permanent based on funding.

Applicants must possess a State of California license as a Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) and be in good standing.
These positions can be filled in the following locations: Sacramento, San Francisco, or Los Angeles.

Administrative Law Judge Division/Hearing Reporting Branch:
The Administrative Law Judge Division supports Commission decision-making by processing formal filings, facilitating alternative dispute resolution, conducting hearings, developing an adequate administrative record, preparing timely proposals for Commission consideration, and preparing and coordinating Commission business meeting agendas.

Required and Desirable Experience/Qualifications

Required Experience/Qualifications:

  • Ability to report verbatim material with accuracy.
  • Experience transcribing conferences, hearings, workshops, and meetings.
  • Experience proofreading final transcripts.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience using Stenograph Case CATalyst.
  • Experience using YesLaw Transcript Generator.
  • Technical or professional experience transcribing gas, electric, telecommunications, water, transportation, environmental, or allied industries or subject matters.
  • Experience transcribing telephonic and/or virtual conferences, hearings, workshops, and meetings.
