Job Description:
SUMMARY
The Health and Safety Specialist function utilizes their acquired knowledge to enable HS technical support to the Plant through coordination of HS activities and programs. This role will lead the implementation, execution, and maintenance of the health, safety, and sustainability systems for the plant.
As the Health and Safety Specialist, you will work collaboratively with the Corporate EHS Team, Plant Management, production, maintenance, and engineering team members and focus on various projects and initiatives within these teams.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Practice safe working techniques and reinforce the safety policies, guidelines, and procedures as set out by the Company
- Review incidents and reporting; participate in and help implement EHS corrective actions
- Ensure the plant is current on all relevant Health and Safety documents
- Coordinate with Plant Manager, Production, Maintenance, and Engineering Departments on facility deficiencies through site audits and inspections.
- Conduct Critical 8 audits to monitor personnel and workspace improvements
- Be the on-site HS support that leads the plant’s HS management system through proactive engagement with the location EHS program champions.
- Facilitates with program champions support the location’s periodic environmental, health and safety management system self-assessments against the Corporate EHS Management Practices and applicable regulations as directed by the Plant Manager and Corporate EHS.
- Ensure that Corporate EHS management practices are embedded in the operation and these management practices are driving the appropriate behavior, help monitor and feedback on corrections.
- Identify site-specific circumstances requiring changes to the EHS management system, and enable the successful implementation and sustainability at a local level.
- Utilizing the EHS Enterprise System (Velocity - EHS) - record and analyze accident and incident records and make recommendations regarding corrective actions, emphasizing pro-active intervention.
- Partner with plant leadership and operators, ensuring that the plant is free from risks to the environment, health, and safety.
- Assist with the new employee orientation process and assure completion of EHS training for all employees.
- Partner with site leadership to ensure that accident and incident investigations are conducted in a timely, effective, and thorough manner to determine root cause and prevention measures.
- Ensure the findings of accident investigations, safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments are brought to the attention of leadership and others who may be affected.
- Use data to make recommendations on changes to training programs, SOPs, JSAs, and tools to prevent accidents, and educate and protect employees.
- Work with Human Resources and Corporate EHS on Worker’s Compensation cases, ensuring they are in line with company policy.
- Coordinate with appropriate EHS analysts, industrial hygienists, consultants, clinics and doctors, engineers, and suppliers related to the EHS needs of the organization.
- Support sustainability operations assessments within the plant
- Support implementation of HS training and records across the plant (engineering, maintenance, Admin etc.)
- Support plant leadership on capital project planning to align sustainability efforts with capital and engineering projects

Technical knowledge/skills
- Basic knowledge of hazardous energy sources, mobile equipment, ergonomics, machine safeguarding, electrical safety, fire prevention, elevated work surfaces, respiratory protection, hazard communication, and other major safety standards
- Some knowledge of EPA and DOT regulations
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes and technologies
- Knowledge and experience with MSHA regulations and handling inspections

Education/Experience ·
- Bachelor’s degree required; Preferably in Occupational Environmental, Health & Safety, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Industrial Engineering or related field
- Minimum of 2 years of Environmental, Health, and Safety experience

Working Conditions: Office, travel, and outdoors/indoors within a Process Plant and Mine environment
Physical Requirements: Computer, ability to make oral presentations, lifting objects up to 50 lbs., standing or sitting for extended periods, extended or irregular hours, bending, climbing, kneeling, stooping, walking on uneven terrain. Must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment and work outdoors in temperature extremes
