Education or experience with radiation detection equipment
Education or experience with the calibration of radiation detection equipment
Education or experience with nuclear power plant emergency conditions and systems
Education or experience with radiation sampling methods and instrumentation
Education or experience with workplace ALARA (exposure minimization) programs
Education or experience with dosimetry and safety training programs
Technical training covering NRC or agreement State radiation safety regulations, or related workplace regulations, guidelines and standards such as OSHA, EPA, DNR Job Description: Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is currently seeking qualified applicants for a Health Physicist I. EH&S is an employing unit which reports to the Senior Vice President for the Division of Operations and Finance at Iowa State University (ISU). EH&S aids the campus community in preventing illness and injury, protects the environment and connects the university to the message of safety and preparedness. EH&S delivers effective education, fosters beneficial partnerships, maintains technical expertise and provides exemplary service. Specific responsibilities of this position include supporting the Radiation Safety program through implementation of ISU’s radiation safety policies and procedures; regular safety surveys of radiation laboratories including collection of samples and using analytical methods to quantify the level of contamination, if found; review of engineering and administrative controls to track inventory and to reduce potential exposure risks; calibration or validation of radiation detection equipment; and participation in state-wide nuclear plant radiological emergency response team training activities. These responsibilities will be accomplished by becoming proficient in various radiation measurement and sampling methods, devices and direct reading instrumentation. The candidate will also help monitor the worker dosimetry program to verify employee compliance with ISU’s ALARA program. The successful candidate will have the ability to form positive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external partners and establish professional campus and community relationships through effective written and oral communication; strong problem solving capabilities along with the ability to work independently as well as with a team; and excellent organizational and multitasking skills to handle a variety of simultaneous duties. The candidate will also possess the ability to routinely use mobile devices and computers along with a variety of software to develop and maintain compliance records and create related reports.
