Description
We are seeking a Health Education Specialist (Community Outreach) responsible for providing advocacy, outreach and educational presentations with the goal of promoting physical, mental, spiritual and social health in vulnerable populations in the South Bay and Centinela Valley service areas. The Health educator will use appropriate strategies and methods to facilitate health promotion and disease prevention in health education courses such as, but not limited to: GOAL diabetes self-management program, Creating Healthier Attitudes Today, FEAST, Diabetes Prevention Program and/or Mental Health First Aid. He/She will collaborate with primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, mental health professionals and other staff on the healthcare team at PLMC Community Health to ensure that each patient's medical needs are addressed and that care solutions are implemented.
Required qualifications for this position includes:
- Bachelor's Degree in Education, that, with or without experience, has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance, OR equivalent education/experience
- Experience working with partner agencies/organizations/governmental entities to bring health services into the school setting
- Leadership: Create a positive work environment in which all participants are motivated to do their best
- Teamwork: Understands his/her role on the team, yet does whatever is needed to make the team a success. Helps team members who need or ask for support or assistance. Brings out the best in others on the team. Shares credit for group accomplishments
- Presentation Skill: Strong public speaking skills required, with an ability to engage participants in an interactive manner. Delivers clear, organized and persuasive messages. Varies style and tone to fit the purpose and audience
- Organizing and Planning Skills: Achieves goals through careful preparation and organization
- Time Management: Prioritize tasks with respect to importance and deadlines; consistently meets deadlines
- Attention to Detail: Show a high level of care and thoroughness in handling the details of the job. Checks work to ensure completeness and accuracy
- Ability to read, speak and understand Spanish fluently
- Flexible shift (available to work some evenings and Saturdays
- Ability to adapt to different personality types and function in a peer coaching capacity
Preferred qualifications for this position includes:
- Master's Degree in Any combination of experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance. Example combinations include: bachelor's degree in Public Health and two years of experience in nutrition counseling
- Registered dietitian
- Experience in leading and presenting health related topics in an elementary school setting
- Experience developing and leading nutrition campaigns, education, and programming
- Prior experience in workshop and/or presentation/seminar development and implementation
- Community organization experience
