Job Description

The Associated Students of CSU, Chico is recruiting for a Head Teacher in the Child Development Lab. This is a full-time, academic year (1700 hours), non-exempt position. The starting rate is $19.81hr ; placement in range is dependent upon experience. The anticipated schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 7:15am to 3:45pm with a weekly meeting Monday evenings from 5:30 to 6:20pm. This schedule is subject to change based on department needs.

The Associated Students (AS) is a comprehensive campus auxiliary corporation of CSU,Chico serving thousands of students, faculty, staff and community members through myriad student programs, services and business enterprises. With an annual budget of more than $21M, the AS operates residential and retail dining services, the Bell Memorial Union, the Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC), and administers the contract for the Wildcat Store (bookstore). Additionally, the AS offers a wide variety of services and programs such as: CAVE (Community Action Volunteers in Education), Child Development Lab, Adventure Outings, Recycling, Sustainability and student government. Typically, the AS employs more than 100 full and part-time employees and more than 750 students.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT LAB

SUMMARY

Under general direction, the Head Teacher oversees the daily operation of Child Development Lab (CDL) teaching program and activities. Responsible for developing and maintaining a developmentally appropriate environment and curriculum which provide for the optimum development of young children.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop and implement written developmentally appropriate curriculum plans, activities and an environment congruent with CDL philosophy and standards set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
  • Develop and execute assessment of programs and/or services for areas of responsibility including, but not limited to setting and implementing goals, evaluating outcomes and ongoing enhancement.
  • Supervise, coach, train, and evaluate assigned staff and volunteers modeling appropriate early childhood practices and teaching techniques.
  • Participate in the planning and delivery of staff development opportunities (i.e. retreats, staff meetings, etc.). Attend other professional development opportunities as needed (i.e. conferences, workshops, etc.).
  • Delegate authority when assigned to accept licensing evaluations and implement emergency procedures in the absence of the CDL Director.
  • Responsible for overseeing the maintenance and cleaning in the classroom and yard areas identifying and reporting safety or health concerns to the CDL Director.
  • Responsible for orchestrating one disaster drill per month.
  • Plan, schedule and conduct parent conferences regarding children's daily activities, progress, and development as well as communicating Lab philosophy.
  • Assist in facilitating parent programs, events and community outreach.
  • Assist in identifying the special needs of children and /or families, providing information about community resources to parents and staff.
  • Responsible for updating individual children’s Plan for Child on a regular basis.
  • Responsible for overseeing the daily health of each child and medication disbursement as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintains portfolio assessments of each child’s growth and development.
  • Submits articles for publication in the Lab newsletter.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in an schoolroom environment including children’s exterior play yard. Some work is performed in an office environment. Regular exposure to children's communicable diseases and some exposure to other health problems (conjunctivitis, lice, etc.); continuous contact with staff, campus community, and public.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sit and stand for extended periods; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; stamina; squatting, floor-sitting and kneeling; ability to lift, move, and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.; ability to communicate verbally and in writing. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices, and procedures of CDL operations, programs, and services.
  • Early childhood development.
  • Laws, rules, and regulations related to CDL operation, programs, and services.
  • Facility sanitation and safety.
  • CPR and First Aid.
  • Principles of supervision, employee development, and performance evaluation.
  • Basic principles if individual and group behavior.
  • Signs and symptoms of child abuse and neglect.

Ability to:

  • Oversee the teaching programs and activities of the Associated Students Child Development Lab.
  • Supervise, coordinate, train, and evaluate staff.
  • Develop and implement curriculum and activities.
  • Express ideas and recommendations both orally and in writing.
  • Insure that assigned programs and activities meet the needs of parents.
  • The incumbent shall work well under pressure: meeting multiple and sometimes competing deadlines.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Two (2) years of professional full-time or part-time equivalent experience within an early learning program.
  • One (1) year of experience supervising staff.
  • Bachelors of Arts
  • Twelve (12) units of ECE/CD, plus three (3) units supervised field experience in ECE/CD
  • Three (3) infant/toddler units are required for a position in the infant/toddler classrooms.

Special Requirements:

  • Child Development Instructional Site Supervisor Permit, or ability to obtain permit within six (6) months of hire.
  • Three (3) infant/toddler units or ability to complete within 6 months of hire.
  • Department of Justice and FBI background clearance or a successful transfer of licensing exemption and a successful licensing record.
  • Possession of CPR and First Aid Certificates or ability to complete within six (6) months of hire.
  • Tuberculosis, MMR and Tdap clearance.
  • Pre-employment physical.
  • Full vaccination status against COVID-19 or an approved medical or religious exemption per Associated Students policy.
  • Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Associated Students will make a conditional offer of employment which may be rescinded if the background check reveals any disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current Associated Students employees who apply for the position.
