Pay Range:
$12.00 - $23.20 per hour (depending on experience)

Position Summary:

Consistent with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle TN, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Wellness Director, the Group Fitness Instructor will instruct high quality group fitness classes, provide excellent customer service to members in a safe, enjoyable and positive environment that promotes member wellness in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Model the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
  • Ensure safe and risk free environment at all times while meeting the individual needs of the participants
  • Lead a high quality group fitness class as directed by the Wellness Director to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals
  • Provide an energized, fun, safe and educational class
  • Begin and end class on time
  • Exhibit a true team player attitude through support, concern and subbing for team members
  • Attend other instructors’ classes, at least once per month
  • Attend and participate actively in fitness staff meetings
  • Keep accurate class attendance records
  • Report to MOD or supervisor immediately - and document - any accident/injury/incident
  • Return all equipment to proper place (e.g., mats, batteries, bands, etc.)
  • Maintain current certifications
  • Maintain working knowledge of fitness industry and YMCA trends to provide effective information and training to members
  • Build relationships and interact with members
Minimum Requirements

Qualifications:

Passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA

An enthusiastic personality with the desire to serve members, volunteers, guests, participants and staff to create a culture of service within our Centers

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community

  • Must present a professional image and possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment and initiative
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Teaching experience: under one year acceptable
  • One specialty Certification preferred (Zumba, Turbokick, etc.)
  • Yoga / Pilates Minimum Training Hours: 20

Certifications Required:

  • Before start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation training
  • Before start of 1st shift: CPR/First Aid/AED
  • Within 90 days of hire: Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y, Foundations of Listen First, Principles of Member Health and Wellness, Wellness Center at the Y, Group Exercise at the Y, Foundations of Strength and Conditioning at the Y, Foundations of Group Exercise at the Y
