Full/Part-time: Full-time (12 months), 40 hours/week, 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday thru Friday

Position Description:
This position is expected to maintain the campus grounds, troubleshoot sprinkler systems, and fix and replace sprinklers as needed. Maintain trees, shrubs, and turf throughout campus. Fertilize of sports fields, trees, plants, and successfully complete daily/weekly work assignments.

Essential Functions:

  • Abiding by Hockaday’s Code of Ethics and Conduct

  • Complies with all policies and procedures of the Hockaday School
  • Ensure that the school, structures, and equipment are following local codes and regulations
  • Assist in maintaining an inventory of adequate supplies and replacement parts and equipment by ensuring maintenance areas are neat and clean and reporting shortages to Director of Facilities
  • Maintain gardens, lawn, and sporting venues
  • Care for and cultivate foliage including planting, fertilizing, weeding, watering, trimming, pruning, soil conditioning, and mulching
  • Ensure pathways, stairs, outdoor seating, and other structures are safe and clean
  • Install, service, sprinklers, and irrigation systems
  • Prepare outdoor areas for various weather conditions by weatherproofing, covering outdoor furniture with tarps, tying down unsecured items, etc.
  • Operate and maintain garden and landscaping equipment
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Turf management or turf degree preferred
  • Basic computer skills Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Experience and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to keep neat and accurate records of time and materials
  • Ability to communicate in written and oral form
  • Ability to understand and follow directions
  • Knowledge of current occupational hazards, and an understanding of safety precautions, building codes and regulations
  • Ability to read and understand DSD Sheets
  • Knowledge of various types of foliage, flowers, trees, shrubs, and other greenery, and how to maintain them
  • Knowledge of gardening products such as fertilizers and applications
  • Familiarity with sprinkler systems and other landscaping equipment
  • Valid driver's license
  • Skills to operate electric hand tools and other required equipment
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • Five (5) years minimum experience as described above
  • Must successfully complete background screening and verification
  • Preferred bilingual in English and Spanish

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Regularly works outdoors in varying weather conditions and climate for extended periods of time
  • Regularly uses close and distance vision
  • Frequently moves around campus, ascends ladders, crawls, twists, turns, and reaches in completing a variety of job duties
  • Ability to frequently move items weighing up to 65 lbs. across the campus
  • Sometimes works in an occasionally stressful environment, effectively dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts with stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions
  • Ability to periodically work flexible hours to support before and after-school or weekend events
