Amgen is seeking a highly motivated summer intern to remotely join the Pharmacokinetics & Drug Metabolism (PKDM) department. Amgen’s 10-13 week virtual internship program offers opportunities to college/university students to apply their training on meaningful projects that impact patient’s lives. Students joining the Amgen internship program will contribute to Amgen’s development pipeline by working on specific projects in their assigned departments while, at the same time, they enrich their technical skills, learn about the drug development process and participate in professional and social networking virtual events.

Pharmacokinetics & Drug metabolism (PKDM) department at our site in South San Francisco, California is dedicated to discovery and development of novel, effective and safe medicines. The department focusses on understanding the PK-PD properties of large and small molecule drug candidates developed across multiple therapeutic areas in the Amgen’s pipeline. For the internship program, we are seeking graduate students pursuing research in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) with focus in mechanistic mathematical modeling and quantitative pharmacological principles. With the support of the hiring manager, the candidate will work on developing fit-for-purpose mathematical models (PK-PD, PBPK) using specialized modeling software to provide quantitative tools in support of the development of novel therapeutics

PKDM internship position will provide opportunity to devise and implement quantitative analysis and strategies in drug development using mechanistic and translational modeling. The ideal candidate should be self-driven and display strong scientific communication skills. This unrivaled opportunity provides learning on the inner workings and cross-functional aspects of PKDM. The program, sponsored by senior leaders at Amgen, provides robust work experiences across many functions. The participation. and successful completion of the CDP summer internship experience will present the opportunity to be evaluated for a full-time offer to join the CDP rotational program in 2022 post-graduation. Full-time opportunities are dependent on available positions and an evaluation of internship performance.

Basic Qualifications

  • Amgen requires that all individuals applying for an graduate internship or a graduate co-op assignment at Amgen must meet the following criteria:
  • 18 years or older
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Currently enrolled in a full time Masters or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from an accredited college or university with a 3.0 minimum GPA or equivalent
  • Completion of one year of study from an accredited college or university prior to the commencement of the internship
  • Must not be employed at the time the internship starts
  • Possess U.S. citizenship, permanent legal residence, or unrestricted work authorization in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Masters or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Pharmaceutical Sciences or Chemical engineering Degree program with a concentration in mechanistic PK-PD modeling and quantitative pharmacology
  • Knowledge and good understanding of modeling softwares such as ADAPT, R, Phoenix, Simbiology/Matlab or Monolix
  • Conceptual understanding of Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics principles
  • Experience in documenting and archiving contributions including data analyses, mathematical models, summary presentations and reports to be shareable with other scientists and foster a collaborative environment
  • Ability to thrive in a high-performance culture with excellent time management, decision-making and organizational skills
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills with strong attention to detail and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to apply research findings, capture information, interpret and analyze results, develop and implement a logical and strategic plan of action
  • Strong project management skills, proficiency in logistic planning from beginning to end, priority setting, timely delivery of results, and multi-tasking
