CURRENT VACANCIES ARE SEASONAL PART TIME AT GOOD PARK GOLF COURSE.


This is manual work in the maintenance of municipal golf course grounds, buildings and equipment.

An employee in this class operates equipment and performs manual work in maintaining fairways, greens, and grounds.

Works as a member of a crew under close supervision or independently under general supervision. Work may require heavy physical exertion and may be performed under adverse weather conditions. The season for employees in this class in the Golf Course Division begins February 15 and ends November 15 each year.

Characteristic Work

Mows greens, tees, rough and fairway areas using walk-behind, triplex fairway and rotary mowers. Changes and sets cups and tees as required. Operates tractor and gang mowers. Waters tees, greens and fairways using hand and automated systems. Operates various utility vehicles to haul supplies and materials used in grounds maintenance and clean-up. Operates hand and power tools used for grounds maintenance and clean-up such as backpack blowers, trimmers and chain saws. Performs manual tasks such as leaf raking, weeding, shoveling, and repairing paths and retaining walls using hand and power tools. Loads and unloads heavy material from trucks, moves or aides in the moving of heavy boxes, equipment and large bulky items. Performs general grounds cleanup, including picking up paper and trash on grounds areas, parking lots, walkways, fairways and other assigned areas; empties trash receptacles as assigned. Performs minor maintenance on machinery such as greasing bearings and fittings, sharpening blades, replacing air filters, and checking and changing fluids. Assists in minor building and structure maintenance such as changing light bulbs, painting, staining, and cleaning. Understands and carries out oral and written instructions. Exhibits proper golf etiquette while performing assigned duties. Maintains good public relations with people contacted during work assignments. Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships. Maintains regular, reliable and punctual attendance. Adheres to all City and departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Learns and follows City and departmental practices and safety procedures. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to read and write. At least one year of paid experience in golf course maintenance work or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training. THE EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT MEANS THAT YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE UP TO 50% OF PAID EXPERIENCE WITH RELATED TRAINING. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.

Some knowledge of the equipment, practices, and methods of golf course maintenance including mowing, edging, raking and weeding. Some knowledge of cultivating, watering and the care of flowers, trees and shrubs. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in grounds keeping. Some knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in load carrying, balancing on difficult grade, and operating equipment in and around golf course areas.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods. Ability to climb ladders and walk on uneven ground. Ability to operate and maintain hand and power tools and other equipment used in grounds maintenance and tree work. Ability to work under adverse weather conditions. Ability to read and understand instructions for completing daily work activities. Ability to prepare and maintain records pertaining to daily work activity. Ability to work cooperatively with others. List of essential functions available upon request.

Competitive Examination Process

The candidates will be ranked in a standard manner based on 90% for qualifying and 10% for related experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Qualifying 90%, Experience 10%.

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.

VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.

DRIVER'S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
