Job Description
THE POSITION

Then join the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' Tuscarora State Forest and provide support and assistance to foresters and assistant district forester with day-to-day activities in the State Forest. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position obtains timber volumes by marking and/or cruising as prescribed by the forester in charge of the sale; marks trees according to prescription developed by the forester; surveys and marks timber sale boundaries, herbicide spray blocks and planting sites; plots surveys and draws appropriate maps for approval; assists in the collection of field data for stand analysis, sale layout, etc.; assists district FPM coordinator with surveillance flights, ground checking and spray projects; applies pesticides for forest management and maintenance; and assists with wildfire prevention, pre-suppression, suppression and prescribed burning. Duties also include being assigned as lead worker for the execution of projects planned by foresters to include deer fence construction and maintenance, tree planting, timber marking, seed collection and wildlife habitat management; assisting in maintenance of tools, equipment, roads and facilities; operating ATV's, and tractors, with spreaders, brush hog, sickle bar mower, and mower deck, etc.; and painting/staining state forest buildings, signs, gates, boundaries, etc.

Essential Functions:

  • Communicate with associates in both oral and written format.
  • Observe Safety and health requirements.
  • Frequently negotiate rough and uneven terrain over long distance.
  • Frequently work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
  • Collect forest data and prepare appropriate reports.
  • Use hand tools such as saws, hammers, axes etc.
  • Interpret plans and specifications for forest management projects.
  • Carry work materials up to 40 lbs. over uneven terrain.
  • Operate a motor vehicle.

Additional Information and Work Hours:
  • Seasonal full-time employment.
  • Work Schedule: (Mon) OFF; (Tues – Thurs) 7:00am – 5:00pm; (Fri) 7:00am – 4:30pm
  • This is a seasonal, full-time position WITHOUT benefits. The season runs from approximately March until November at which time the employee is placed on leave without pay.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

Qualifications:


  • Minimum Experience and Training Requirements -
    An associate's degree in forest technology; OR completion of equivalent formal education in forestry.
  • CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: This position requires possession of a valid PA non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.
  • PA residency currently waived for this title.
