JOB SUMMARY:
The Food Service Worker serves a critical role in the functioning of the agencys child development centers by serving nutritious food to children in a safe and timely manner. This individual receives food from the catering company, assessing for quality, and portioning food according to the requirements of the Child and Adult Care Food Program. The Food Service Worker is responsible for the smooth operation of the food service component of the program, including inventory and distribution of utensils, ordering of supplies and resolution of shortages or other issues.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reviews menus and ensures accuracy of received food order upon delivery.
- Practices and enforces personal hygiene, including wearing appropriate attire.
- Maintains cleanliness of food service area.
- Takes temperature of all food items delivered upon receipt.
- Checks all food for spoilage or other issues at receipt and prior to serving.
- Maintains accurate records of all spoiled food or other catering/delivery issues and reports to Operations staff immediately.
- Divides food into portions based on Child and Adult Care Food Program requirements and distributes to classrooms in advance of mealtimes.
- Monitors child allergy chart and prepares substitutions for children with allergies to specific meal components.
- Maintains inventory of non-perishable food for emergencies and reports needed food to Operations staff.
- Maintains inventory of serving supplies monthly and reports needed material to Operations staff.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds (average weight of food trays and supplies and/or a childs weight).
- Demonstrates a knowledge and understanding of food sanitation, Child and Adult Care Food Program and Head Start standards and implements them in all aspects of work.
In addition to the responsibilities listed above, all Gads Hill Center employees are responsible for the following:
- Participate in agency outreach and recruitment events, including evenings and weekends.
- Participates in supervision meetings and workshops within the agency and outside (if applicable).
- Participates in civic engagement activities that advance the mission of Gads Hill Center.
- Advance parent leadership development.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Valid Illinois and Chicago food service sanitation certificates required.
- Must have the ability to read and comprehend English.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and organization skills.
- Ability to pass a criminal record and child abuse/neglect registry check.
- A passion for the mission of Gads Hill Center.

Entry Salary Range: $15/hour
