Vidant Medical Transport provides critical care air and ground service to areas within 150 miles of Greenville, North Carolina. We are based at Vidant Medical Center, home of the region's only Level-1 Trauma Center and Children's Hospital. Vidant Medical Transport is nationally recognized for safety, quality and service. We are fully accredited by CAMTS (the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems). Responsibilities
1.Utilizes the nursing processes to direct patient care and improve patient's physiological and emotional well-being; collaborates with physicians and others on the healthcare team to implement and evaluate models of patient care delivery.
2.Apply, revise & evaluate the Art and Science of Nursing to execute the Vidant Medical Center Nursing Professional Practice Model components of Caring, Professional Development, Professionalism and Collaboration in daily practice. Utilize the Model of Care delivery and resources to support shared decision-making and enhance professional nursing practice, patient care delivery, quality care and outcomes. Serves as facilitator, collaborator, resource and consultant at the unit and organizational level.
3.Engages in professional growth and development activities such as specialty certification, advanced degrees, continuing competence activities and advanced educational opportunities to guide practice. Assist others in professional development activities through education, mentoring, role modeling and developing others. Specialty Certification and minimum Associates Degree Nursing (ADN) required.
4.Professional: The Flight Nurse functions as a professional representative of the Vidant EastCare system and shall support and up-hold the mission, goals, and objectives of the system at all times. The Flight Nurse will:
a. utilize proper channels for improvement of the system;
b. at all times maintain a positive customer service approach;
c. maintain physical fitness and body weight as monitored by an annual physical exam and quarterly weigh-ins;
d. maintain a professional and neat appearance while on duty and representing Vidant EastCare during other functions;
e. maintain a cooperative or team oriented working relationship with co-workers;
f.work and communicate effectively.
5.Clinical: The Flight Nurse is responsible for rendering advanced life support care to critically ill or injured patients in adherence with established protocols and standards of care. The Flight Nurse will:
a. maintain skills through mandatory participation in continuing education sessions and clinical activities;
b. be knowledgeable of and able to operate critical life support equipment efficiently and safely;
c. attend required scheduled staff meetings to enhance clinical knowledge and skills unless excused by the management team;
d. thoroughly document patient care to accurately reflect assessment and interventions;
e. complete daily base duties such as patient follow-up and 24 hour report records;
f. perform all other duties as assigned;
g. remain proficiency in intubation, rapid sequence induction, surgical cricothyrotomy, interosseous insertion, needle thoracostomy, external vein cannulation, adult/pediatric ventilator management, IABP competency, neonatal equipment competency.
6.Operational: The Flight Nurse is responsible for thorough knowledge of the Vidant EastCare policies and procedures, and shall assist in meeting operational goals and objectives. The Flight Nurse will:
a.prepare for shift duties by inspecting equipment and on-board supply inventories at beginning of work shift;
b.assure proper maintenance and retrieval of Vidant EastCare and referring agency equipment;
c.maintain a clean patient transport environment, including all medical equipment, supplies and living quarters;
d.restock equipment and supplies immediately following each transport;
e.complete monthly duties as assigned;
f.operate communication equipment professionally;
g.assure safety of patients and all others functioning in and around the aircraft and ambulance;
h.respond promptly to Vidant EastCare pages in order to effect an expedited response;
i.perform all Vidant EastCare missions as assigned;
j.treat patients under EastCare protocols as determined by the EastCare Medical Director.
7.Quality Improvement: The Flight Nurse shall be responsible for supporting and participating in the Vidant EastCare Quality Improvement Plan. The Flight Nurse will:
a.participate in the Vidant EastCare Quality Improvement program through membership on the QI council and follow through on various QI activities as assigned directly by the Medical Director or EastCare Management;
b.ensure adherence to and update as needed, Vidant EastCare Policies and Procedures, in conjunction/collaboration with EastCare Management and/or Medical Director;
c.participate in developing and completing research projects designed to advance or evaluate air medical transport.
8.Continuing Education: The Flight Nurse will:
a.assist with the orientation of new personnel to the Vidant EastCare system;
b.identify areas for continuing education specific to transport through chart reviews, crew interaction, etc;
c.assist the EastCare Management in designing, implementing and updating the continuing education program for the Vidant EastCare system;
d.participate in continuing education activities to maintain current medical command status.
9.Staffing: As an employee of the Vidant EastCare system, the Flight Nurse shall support continuity of service through flexibility in scheduling and base assignment. The Flight Nurse will be prepared and prompt in reporting for scheduled shifts as assigned.
10.Special Projects: The Flight Nurse shall participate in system wide and base site projects on an ongoing basis.
The Flight Nurse will:
a.support and participate in system wide and base site educational activities to area hospitals and community health agencies;
b.participate in the monitoring of safe air medical operations.
11. Patient Confidentiality and Privacy - The Flight Nurse shall protect the privacy of all patient information in accordance with the Vidant EastCare privacy policies, procedures, and practices, as required by federal and state laws.
The Flight Nurse will:
a.access protected health information and other patient information only to the extent that is necessary to complete his/her duties;
b.share such information only with those individuals and entities that have a "need to know" with regard to specific patient information;
c.report, without the threat of retaliation, any concerns regarding Vidant EastCare's policies and procedures on patient privacy and any observed practices in violation of that policy to the designated Privacy Officer;
d.actively participate in the Vidant EastCare privacy training programs;
e.communicate privacy policy information to coworkers, students, patients, and others in accordance with the Vidant EastCare privacy policies.
Minimum Requirements
Associated Degree Nursing (ADN) Required.
Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) Preferred
Registered Nurse or temporary North Carolina licensure or status as defined in job description.
Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
Clinical experience as part of education.
Meets all the other criteria/requirements as defined by EastCrare Policy and Procedure.
ACLS, PALS, NRP, and a trauma certification must be obtained before the end of orientation.
Must obtain your EMT within one year from the end of your orientation. One specialty certification for example, CFRN must be obtained within 2 years of hire is required. 3 to 5 years of experience as a RN is required from an ICU or ER setting.
The ability to treat patients under EastCare protocols is determined by the EastCare Medical Director.
All employees who were employed as a Flight Nurse and weigh no more than 250 pounds before January 1, 2019, are considered grandfathered in terms of weight requirements, and therefore competent to perform their duties and responsibilities.
Any grandfathered employee who vacates their position and later seeks rehire as a Flight Nurse must meet the minimum position requirements existing at the time of rehire.

PALS, NRP must be obtained before the end of orientation. EMT within one year from the end of orientation.
One specialty certification in neonatal/pediatric field (for example C-NPT) obtained within 2 years of hire. 3 years of experience as a RN with some experience in neonatal, pediatric, or critical care field.
Maintain a maximum weight limit of 225 pounds. The Flight Nurse hired prior to January 1, 2019 may maintain a maximum weight limit of 250 pounds or less.
