Job Description
Overview : Supervise the Fleet Department including strategic functions associated with heavy and light gasoline/ diesel powered vehicles, including on road, off road vehicles, equipment, and other non-stationary motorized fleet equipment for various County Departments.Responsibilities : (A position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties which may be found in a position of the class. Organize, establish, coordinate, and control inspection, repair, service, fueling, disposal and storage operations, utilization of maintenance garages, parking yards, and fuel storage facilities; Devise implement, and assess shop methods; Inspect equipment and disseminate work orders to mechanics on parts to be repaired or replaced; Assure equipment is repaired before returning it to service; Advise and instruct mechanics on performing highly skilled work on diesel, gasoline engines, and accessories; Initiate requisitions for repair parts, tools, and supplies as required; Maintain records, and assure continuity of operations, and prepare reports as required; Supervise, train, evaluate, and discipline assigned staff as required; Enforce policies, administrative directives and safety policies and procedures; Evaluate emergency calls after hours to determine whether a response is warranted; Abide by all Department and County policies and procedures

Perform other related duties as assignedQualifications : Education. High school diploma or equivalent
Experience.
Four years full-time in a responsible, professional, operational, administrative position to include experience in repair and maintenance of gasoline, diesel, or alternatively fueled automotives or construction equipment; which at least two years must have been as a supervisor or manager with responsibility for organization structure or staffing, work scheduling, conflict resolution, budget preparation, cost control of parts, inventories, or contract services in a large or multiple facility, labor intensive fleet management environment

Licenses/Certifications.
Must have a valid unrestricted driver’s license. Will be required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License; Class A or Class B with tanker and hazmat endorsements within the first year of hire.
Special Requirements:
Positions requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to operate vehicles on public roads are subject to federal drug and alcohol testing regulations, which include pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return to duty, and follow-up testing.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:Knowledge of modern methods, materials, and tools used in automotive and construction equipment mechanic trades; Mechanisms, uses, limitations, maintenance, repairs and fueling of automotives, diesel vehicles, and public works equipment; Fleet equipment management; Budget administration; Supervisory practices; Hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; Price trends and grades or quality of parts, fuels, and shop equipment and supplies; Computer hardware and software applications pertinent to record keeping, maintenance and repair records, inventory control, and related fleet/garage maintenance and operations; Internal cost accounting and inventory control programs; Policies and procedures
Skill
