SFCC is one of two accredited community colleges that comprise the Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS). In addition to serving the urban and suburban population in greater Spokane, including students from Fairchild Airforce Base, CCS provides educational services to rural communities throughout our 12,302 square-mile region in Eastern Washington, including students from the Spokane and other Eastern Washington tribes.
Serving about 8,200 students, SFCC endeavors to be an educational leader and a responsive partner with the community and region to provide access to relevant programs of the highest quality. We offer a large liberal arts/transfer program (approximately 75% of total enrollment) as well as state-of-the-art professional technical programs (about 25%). The Community Colleges of Spokane is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Fitness Center Manager in the Athletics Division.
GENERAL DEFINITION
Under direction of the District Dean for Physical Education, this position will manage the Fitness Center and work with individuals within SFCC and CCS to assist with the planning, implementing, and review of Fitness Center activities and programs. This position will manage the day-to-day operations for Fitness Center programs and services within the center to ensure services are coordinated at SCC and within CCS district. Programs and services include: weight training, cardio conditioning, flexibility training, core conditioning, etc.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating Fitness Center policies and procedures as well as programs and services ensuring student success and compliance with applicable laws rules and regulations, accreditation standards, as well as policies and procedures established by the District and SCC. *
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the Fitness Center which includes: weight training, cardio conditioning, flexibility training, core conditioning, etc. ensuring smooth operations of the center and that programs and services are coordinated with all departments at SCC and within CCS. *
- Supervise (train, schedule, evaluate, discipline and respond to grievances) hourly and workstudy employees. Adhere to classified contracts and all district rules and regulations ensuring efficient operations of the Fitness Center. *
- Inform and educate staff about behavior and performance expectations, provide timely and accurate feedback regarding performance, and ensure performance and behavioral problems are corrected promptly and effectively. *
- Maintain Fitness Center budgets; review estimates and approve expenditures. *
- Evaluate and monitor equipment and make purchases of new equipment as needed. *
- Ensure all patrons have completed appropriate paperwork (medical clearance, awareness of risk, facility rules, and etc.) and are registered in monitoring systems.
- Responsible for the maintenance of manual and electronic filing systems. Ensure accuracy of data input into electronic database systems and generate reports as required. *
- Hear and assist in the resolution of student complaints and provide appropriate referral to internal and/or external resources that can serve specific student needs. *
- Responsible for maintaining Fitness Center communications materials (signage, brochures, web pages, forms and other materials) updating materials as needed. *
- Serve on committees at SCC/CSS as requested.
- May assist in obtaining grants and other funding sources to secure additional funding for programs and services.
- Model professional decorum and mutual respect in all personal interactions. *
- Complies with district policy, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statute and collective bargaining agreements. *
- Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform related duties as required. *
- Indicates this is an essential duty.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS)
- Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Kinesiology or related field from an accredited institution. An equivalent mix of education and experience that demonstrates the candidate meets all competency requirements for this position.
- Knowledge/experience of Fitness Center operations.
- Knowledge and experience of Fitness Center programming.
- Knowledge of fitness equipment and proper use.
- Experience using computers, spreadsheets, database and word processing software.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to interpret rules, policies and procedures.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to effectively organize multiple work assignments, involving competing priorities, to produce work products that are accurate, of high quality and meet deadlines.
- Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
- A demonstrable understanding and acceptance of the mission, values, goals and objectives of CCS.
- The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution, community and technical college system.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning and working environment that honors diversity, equity and inclusion.
PREFERRED COMPETENCIES (DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS)
- Personal Trainer Certification.
- One (1) or more years of experience as a lead or supervisor.
- Two (2) or more years of increasingly responsible experience within an Athletics department.
TOTAL COMPENSATION: $40,456 - $41,739.
Total compensation is an estimate based upon adding the following amounts together:
Base compensation, plus- Current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates, plus
- Median retirement fund contributions.
Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the District to sponsor an H1-B visa. - Occasional exposure to fumes, dust, odors and/or biohazards.
- Frequent oral and auditory communication with others.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Contract 12-month position.
- Position is exempt from Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
- Requires local or regional travel. If using personal vehicle proof of driver's license and car insurance required.

This is a contracted, exempt management position. Medical, dental life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under the Public Employees Benefits Board; TIAA-Cref retirement plan. Vacation leave accrues at the rate of 14.67 hours per month (22 days per year) and sick leave accrues at the rate of one (1) day per month, effective upon employment. (For positions that are less than full time, leave accruals will be prorated to the percentage of the position.)
